Top of my list is a 99 Audi S4 Avant. The spec is massive
After AMD chip and Millteck exhaust 325 bhp
Not bad for an estate!!!!
Need to have space for me the wife a toddler and a baby.
And boot space for a double buggy etc etc
As much as i'd like an EVO 6 or STi 7,room is a big factor now.
My STi 4 door is just too small for days out and weekends away.
Any sugestions appreciated.Got away with it for long enough and now the wifes getting pi55ed off.
Cheers
Darren

Tricky one this... A couple sprung to mind -
New Legacy GTB might fit the bill (280bhp as standard, loads of kit, excellent handling), current shape from £12k (1998/99) to £23k (new).
Or BMW 540 Touring, RWD, 286bhp, not sure about pricing.

My old man has a BMW 540i touring, '99 on a V.
It is the best estate car I have driven in terms of the total package (actually the best car, period).
It has plenty of speed, great handling, all the toys, plenty 'o' leather, quite good looks (prefered the old shape looks), 5 speed auto/tiptronic style g'box, and can be had for less than £22k, leaving a little for a few tweaks.
His actual car has the Sat nav, traffic master, cd player, sports seats and the 540 comes with 40mm lower suspension, 17x8" wheels, contisport tyres, LSD, traction control.
The new shape is actually 4.4 litres, 286bhp on 95RON fuel, gotta be good for over 300 on SUL with a chip. Peak torque is 330ftlbs at an easy 3000rpm I think.
He might even sell it you ask nicely, as he was looking at an Audi RS6.

Merc E55 AMG estate
Audi S8
Audi RS2
BMW 540i estate (must have TV)
Volvo s80 T6... nah.. only joking.....
S4 estate seems sensible choice especially as it has dated better than the saloon.
My 2 cents worth.

Get a UK/Sti Wagon, mines a MY00 UK Cost £17500 with 80 miles on the clock, its only been registered 9 months. Can get 18 month old son in and 3 month old son in, double buggy and dog, plus the wife. This leaves you with £4500 to spend on mods. New tubro, fmic, full decat, new suspension and about 330+bhp. Wicked.
So there you go £22000 just spent for you.

I've driven a Forester turbo with PPP (in fact Listers had one one 17k yesterday) and it was great fun.
We also borrowed one for a long weekend and, quite apart from having loads of room in the boot, the kids (14 & 8) loved it, my Wife loved it, and I could certainly live with it.
Sorry for the Subaru suggestion, but I've not tried any estates worth a second thought.

LoL at the skyline suggestions, I don't think I could get the old buggy in the boot of my skyline, and even my daughter's booster seat is slightly too wide for the back seats.
