Info requested about Mitsubishi FTO's

I have a friend looking at buying one, just wanted general info like reliability, costs of running, etc. Are they a good buy or will he be regretting it. He'll be buying from a japanse importer.

most expensive way to do it.
Nice cars IMO.
Will no doubt get slated on this board, you'll get a load of "" I raced one and beat it no probs, on the twisties or in the wet...""
They look good and go well, handle nicely, quite quick, half decent mpg to boot.
Tip can be fun saps power - is a good novelty but wears off after a while.

how would you suggest doing it? if you reckon his way is expensive. He doesnt like the idea of buying a car with out seeing it before if you were going to suggest importing it himself

Try FTO Owner's Club UK
I nearly bought one a while back, got a Fiat Coupe 20v turbo instead though. FTO is a nice car.

Won't humour MattN with tales of whipping the FTO but.....
there is an FTO specialist somewhere in or v. near Wednesbury in the West Mids. I drive past it when I work over that way.
I don't know anymore about it than that. Oh - and I agree they do look good, but I have heard rumours of costly repairs which is worth looking into.
Cheers

Personally I didn't like the FTO I drove, they are meant to be reliable, I didn't find it quick (200bhp Mivec Manual jobbie) Sounds lovely tho V6 motor, but found the door sills very high, the windows are tiny too, found it a bit claustraphobic (spelling?!) tbh.

the ralliart ones are really special.
They have an identical spec to all other FTO's except they cost twice as much.
Ralliart sell them new which means they are the new shape (97>. Most you see are the old shape.
Mitsubishi will service them - but they are very expensive.
They don't seem to really fast but quick enough for most.

We have just sold my missus FTO GPX, which is the 2.0 V6 Mivec version 196bhp.
We had a manual box on it and have to say it was a total scream to drive.
Beautiful looks , the mivec sounds gorgeous on full chat.
I found it a really rewarding drive as you good drive it 10/10 and it felt safe and solid. Completely controllable on the limits.
We had ours for 18 months with no probs at all.
Its a great all round car but just doesnt have the performance.
Turbo charge it and it could be real fun!!!!!!!!!!
