It musta had some serious power!

Easy peesy to guess what that was. Raced a top of the range S4 audi the other day and beat it no problem. However, the big brother RS4 will shaft pretty much any scooby on the road. 3.2 litre twin turbo if I recall.

I've had several of these beasts, started life as a group B rally car in the mid 80's, awesome looking machines, mine were standard at 220bhp but the quattreo sport (see piccy above) with the short body are well rapid, the standard was 300+ bhp !!!

PS they also stick to the road like poo to a blanket.

If it was a new car, then it might have been the RS4. I had a little fun with one of these on the M20 a couple of days ago, and boy do they go.

Still, it was on German plates, and the guy must have thought he was still on the Autobahn!

RS4 - 2.7 twin turbo. Dare i say it? Audi had help from Cosworth developing this engine.

The Rs2 has 315bhp so either you have loads of power or they were keeping the revs below 6k ?!

Having recently moved from an UK Impreza to an Audi S4 I'm very surprised that you beat it no problem......That wouldn't be my impression having driven both.

Had a run in with an Audi S6 last night on the rounds around Cheltenham and eventually to Swindon.

I kept up with him all the way.

A mate of mine brought an Audi ur-quattro (ie wide arch model) just after I got my '98 Impreza - we've still got both cars, 4 years on. And hence I've driven the quattro a lot and back to back with the Impreza.
To be truthful, they are very different cars in delivery of performance even though on paper they seem similar, ie AWD, turbocharged. The Impreza feels more frentic and give more confidence, especially when overtaking. But the quattro's torque is much more usable as it develops maximum at 1750rpm.
In the real world, both cars on your favourite B-road will be neck in neck, the quattro with greater grip, the Impreza with slightly greater performance. Performance comparsions on motorways don't tell you anything.

That doesn't surprise me IIRC these cars were the homologation of the mighty S1 groupA car from the late 80's, which were the first cars to introduce 4 wheel drive, and soon became a very dominant force in GroupA rallying, putting out, wait for it!... ... as much as 600bhp. Due to the demise of such powerful cars, and the abolition of GroupA the S1 faded into the mists of time

BTW, i hate audis. But i have a massive respect for the S1 and the early quattros

Dunno about the power output of the road car tho'

Jeff, my older bro picked up his S4 at the weekend (and let me have a go ) and boy, those things shift!!!

I cannot get over how much Torque there is in EVERY gear - cruising down his private road ( )in 6th about 60mph and I put the throttle down - before I knew it we were at 90mph. It is so smooth and the power is in from 1500 rpm. Second, third, etc...all pull from modest speeds.

The only criticism is the weight of the car, it does feel like it is the full 1500kg round roundabouts.

The performance figures on paper are similar to UK spec Scoobs but on the road it felt more like my mates old P1, especially above 60mph. My UK95 with de-cat is running c. 260bhp & 240 lbs/ft but the power delivery is sooooo different. I reckon I'd have to be driving pretty hard to keep up with the S4 and at autobahn speeds, forget it.

Very nice cars - wicked gadgets too.

But I like the noise and lack of refinement of my Turbo

Paul

Jeff, my car isn't standard which was enough to pull me ahead in a quick (non-launch) 0-60 dash. Had I been standard it would have been neck and neck. I respect the S4, lovely car but I think if I had the cash I'd prefer the RS4

2.7 litres, I was sure it was bored out to 3.2! Oh well, guess I was wrong...........this time

Cool

Having had a bit of a do on a couple of occasions with a well driven 20V Ur quattro down our local dual carriageway, including the roundabouts on the interchanges, and got soundly beaten on both occasions I think I'm able to say that if you've beaten one with a standard UK scoob, he wasn't trying The amount of grunt & grip these things have got defies belief. As striker66 says, they stick like sticky **** to a velcro blanket

Jeff - they are a lovely car the S4's, I'd have one tomorrow if I hadn't got so much money in my scoob.
Are you planning to modify it at all ?

I think the old short wheelbase quattros (homologation specials) were 480bhp.

Exclamation

Audi Quattro if it was an old one run around 220bhp (wide arched).Doubt if it was the short wheel base version! The 220bhp one is renowned as being able to outrun a Diablo round the lanes..Awesome handling...O-60 is around 6.3 secs and tops at around 144mph..so could have been std as an STi isnt excatly quick!!!

The Short Sports are very rare, I think it was 200 built for Group A homologation. Road going spec was 250 Audi BHP, so probably a little more... I think the Autocar figures for a road going stock version were 4.9 secs to 60 and 150mph top end.

I have seen a 580HP version on hillclimbs, and there is no way to describe just how viciously the car accelerates, it has to be seen to be believed.

If the cars was wide arched, that makes it an original shape quatro or sport, I didn't think the later S2 onwards had the wide arches?

You're right, they didn't. My Brother in law, had one, and it looked exactly the same as the 2.3 quattro. So i think, only the S1's had flared arches.

Saxo

If you where at 50 mph in 3rd against an S4 you get your **** handed to you......no question

Shunty

I'm looking to get the AmD chip done (315BHP & 390 ft/lb gulp) sort the brakes out with Porsche Calipers & get a short-shifter fitted.... There is of course the option of going the whole hog with AmD for a princly sum of £5000 and getting 420BHP & 500ft/lb but I think my wife would notice......

Jeff...500ft/lb....Jesus Christ thats more than a Maclaren F1...!My 500bhp conversion will probably only manage a pathetic 430ft/lb torque...

But I wouldn't be in 3rd at 50 six-speed boy I'd still be in 2nd. But even after 60mph I would have extended my lead because he was clearly standard and I'm not!

Using Autocar stats (from memory) the Impreza is: 0-60 in 5.3 and 100 in 14.9 and the S4 is 5.5 and 14.6 so I fail to see how after 50 even a standard scooby would get its **** handed to it. Admittedly the impreza's little lead would be eroded but that is one fair drag race if you ask me.

But as I said, my car isn't standard so he was quite easy 0-60 and I'm confident I could have pulled away all the way to 100mph at which time he might have began to reel me in. The RS4 of the other hand.....
