Selling P1 for Clio Sport 172 Cup
#1
After a very enjoyable period of ownership I am having to sell my modded P1 in exchange for something a bit cheaper due to the need to grow up and buy a house!
The current favourite on my list is the Clio Sport 172 Cup, which is £12,995. I would be interested to hear of anyones experiences with this car or has any reccommended alternatives at about this price. Including similar running and insurance costs.
All input will be greatly appreciated.
Oh, and if anyone wants to by a great P1 then let me know
Cheers

Well, I've been thrashing around in a 172 Cup, courtesy of my mate, who's dad owns our local Renault dealiship and it is bl00dy great!!!
Compared to a normal 172 there doesn't appear to be much in it when you first get behind the wheel, but you soon realise they are different when you get to drive one properly.
Up to about 80mph in a drag style sprint, there aint much in it performance wise, but after that the Cup just keeps pulling like a train. Also accelerating in 4th from a steady 80mph up to say 110mph (redline in 4th gear), the Cup is a good 4 or 5 secs faster than a normal 172. We have timed them to compare as I wanted to know if the Cup was really any better, which it turns out that it actually is.
The Cup is NOT just a stripped 172, there are actual differences to the engine and ECU to alter the performance, but the 89kg weight saving also adds to the effect.
Also, the handling is just that bit sharper and the steering is just that bit more positive, in fact I reckon they have got it just right now. The track is wider and the camber has changed to make it handle the way I like it.
For the money, there is nowt to touch them and I was very tempted to get one. Have decided now though that I'd rather spend my money on a Scoob, as I just have to have one at least once, so we'll have to do some serious thinking...

I have a 13 month old 172. Have been thrashing about in it recently now the roads are drier and the handling is awesome, even though the tyres are knackered.
Would love a go in a Cup version, but would not trust any Renault dealer i have come across so far to maintain it. I am so glad my cars a company car !!
Quote from Captain Slarty (Joe) on cliosport.net regrading the Cup: "Never has so much been removed by so many for so little"
I frequent cliosport.net too.

Hi
I now own a Mark 2 172 Sport, when getting in and out of the 22B and then into the 172 it was how should I put it (Great)!!
172's have all the extra's, hard to get below 30mpg's and are great on track! a pleasure to drive every day which was something I couldn't do with the scoob.
A UK300 tried to keep up last night on a B Road but I just remember seeing his lights dissapear in the distance behind me, shows what a little pocket rocket can do.
Harj...

Are there any Car Warehouses bringing in cheap Clio Cups yet?
If so what sort of prices?
Trade Sales are doing Clio Sports for £11499, but they haven't got any Cups.
If they do start bringing them in, on a sliding scale equivalent I can see the Cup being about £9,104 which would be a seriously good price.

Cheers for all the comments guys, its interesting the stuff you find out that isn't put in the magazines!! (Dealers, etc.)
Anyway, it seems that the Clio Cup is a great car and someone has suggested a Cupra, what else should I be looking at in this price bracket?
I think it could be a busy weekend of test drives!

Well Litchfields are doing Honda Civic Type-R's for £13,319 OTR, which is about ballpark as well.
Might be worth considering as well.
Seems like you have a similar list to me:-
a) Renault Clio Sport/Cup
b) Seat Leon Cupra 20VT
c) Honda Civic Type-R
I've been mulling it over for weeks, so if you make a decision let me know, it might just push me in the right direction :-)

bluenose172: Why should that stop an importer buying a load of cheap models from France and bringing them in?
Or are you saying the entire allocation is already sold to UK dealers?
Not sure I understand why the 'Car Superstore' types won't have access to limited editions. I've seen them sell limited editions before. A friend of mine managed to save about £15K on a Porsche GT3, which has a pretty limited production run.
Can you provide more info?

Well, there are only 500 "172 Cup" models for the UK, but not all are yet sold so in theory yes they could but them but at UK prices and the foreign equivalent will not be called the "172 Cup", but is known as the "172 Jean Ragnotti" instead.
No reason why they won't be imported onthe cheap though, but they aren't out yet as the UK is the first place that they are available.
So for now, if you want one then it's gotta be a pukka UK car!

Mind you I seem to remember Renault had a bit of a fiasco with the Clio Williams LIMITED edition a few years back.
They said they would build 500 (or something like that) and when they sold like hot cakes they decided to build a few thousand more - to the disdain of the existing customers.
Maybe they will call there next car a V-LTD , where V=variable.

Had a 172 for a year now in combination with at first a UK MY99 4dr and then a MY01 WRX wagon (with PPP). Very happy with the 172 in the company of either of these, though it's ultimately not as powerful as either.
The Cup looks like a bargain and I hope they stick to the limited production as too many on the road will dilute the experience and the residual value (there speaks a scooby driver)...
As far as dealers are concerned, you don't have to go near one for the first 12,000 miles or 2 years, so it's not a massive concern.
Cheers,
Gareth

I have recently purchased a MK1 172 Sport (i'm not a fan of the MK2's to be honest)
I had looked at a few scoobys first though...
when i weighed up the costs of one against the other, the clio won hands down...
ok, so u lose out on the performance side of things but this clio certainly goes pretty well
certainly faster than my vr6 and as other people have mentioned, not quite so fuel hungry !!
i got a £110 rebate on my insurance with the clio so you must get a massive rebate compared to the p1....
as far as reliabilty etc , ask me in 6 months time as i've only had this a week or so....
so in my opinion.. nice car, no impreza but then again we know that !!, should be cheap to run, looks good, goes well... stops incredibly well...erm
there you go....

My mate got a regular mark 2 172 for 12.5k cash, might have even been 12k. The dealer really thought he was gonna get him to pay list, he argued that the motorpoint ones weren't uk spec, blah blah blah. however, you probably won't get so far with the cup version.
Goes nicely, boot's tiny though.

Due to pick up my Cup on the 8th October as a run about to keep the miles down on the P1. Car was due to arrive in November but delivery date has been brought forward.
Renault apparently had just under 400 orders for the original 500 RHD examples when I ordered mine so I wouldnt wait too long before deciding as although the cup wont be strictly limited its not a certainty they will build anymore.

Had a go in a Cup 172 last weekend in Tunbridge Wells...
It feels quite nice, got great turn-in lot of grip and very strong breaks...(don't know how fade resistant they are..?) and generally feels quite solid..
The only downside that i can see is the interior.. I think the standard 172 interior is very vice, but the Cup interior looks like it's been taken from a very low grade model.. 1.2litre..?
If i get one, it'll have to have the optional buckets, Harnesses and cage...
