Word on the street is the Focus is the better car in performance / handling / braking....well Autocar anyway. Sounds like an obvious upgrade then, for less money? Oh, I forgot about the waving....that'll keep you in the Scooby....until you get pasted by a Focus that is...Thoughts?

I'm playing devils advocate obviously !

I'll wait and see, but I could be interested!

Nothing afFORDable has tempted me away from the Scooby, but the RS might do it.

I'll wait it bit longer for the planned AWD version, should only be another five years if it took 'em this long to do a FWD. )

I'm sure you would, but your personal habits are not the topic of this thread

Cool

Pulled up next to one last Friday evening in Chelmsford. Had a uk 02 plate on, but was a left-hooker & had lots of test equipment on board. Had a good look as it was stuck in traffic. He attempted to lose me afterwards; I'm please to say my MY00 was able to keep up.
Looks very agressive after the ST170; but I wouldn't buy one though - it's a Ford after all.......

LOL......I am a Scooby convert after years of owning other makes and models and now I don't think there is anything that would tempt me away (Excluding some supercars) There is something about a Scooby.

Yep, i would, but not at the money they'll be asking for a new one. But it'll take a long time before second hand values drop significantly i reckon.

Could definitely become a valid second car option in a few years time though...

dont care what these guys say, any car ive tried doesnt come close to the security i feel (at any speed) driving down a wet, bumpy irish backroad...any of yee who have driven off the beaten path in ireland will know what i mean... it may pack a performance punch but a FWD wont put down the power as well on these roads, i do like fords i kinda think the scoob is the jap cossie hehe

Got to agree with jason,my last car was a focus and i had no complaints,it drove and handled very well (for a fwd)and i should imagine the rs will be a great car to drive but the scoob has taken over me like no other.
I'd like to have a go in one, but as long as i've got my burbling eye catching beast to jump in straight after (and i'm not talking about the wife)

Not me, my little one likes her own door and electric window. IMO the Focus has to have one of the worst dashboards I have ever seen.

Red face

why buy an RS when the Cosworth comes out in 2005 - you'll have a car that is second best - rather like those who just shelled out on a ST170....

...or who bought a WRX before the STi came out.......doh!

Yep I would agree. 200 odd bhp is probably the useble limit for fwd. What happens a few months down the line when you want more?

(You know you will)

Wait for the Cosworth

nope, not going back to FWD for a while methinks. It may be a very good hot hatch, but it's a hot hatch, not in the same league as the 4wd rally replica stuff.

Well in that case save your pennies for another 3 years - if you're in the market for a £20k caer you're hardly on the breadline ;D

yada yada yada 'scoobies are the best car in the world bar none' yada yada yada 'fords are crap' yada yada yada 'the focus RS isn't that quick' yada yada yada.
Change the record guys. Just check out Autocar next week, and watch the RS take 2.5 secs per lap out of a UK STI7 round Goodwood. Not biased, just trust the facts thats all.

Ford had a "version" of the car at RSOC national day on Sunday at Donnington.

It was very well driven, but a very quick car nevertheless! Couldn't believe the corner speed it held, and the very un-FWD characteristics, but that's a sorted chassis and the ATB diff for ya!

Touring cars seem to manage to put down 300+ bhp pretty well, and most of them are fwd

I fancy one, probably more than I have fancied a car for a long long time.

Stand it next to a hideous bugeye Scoob, an Civic Type MPV-R, or a girly Mini and it wins on looks alone.

Ignore the press blurb. Circuit testing tells bugger about real world driving. It may take 2.5 seconds per lap out of an STi, but will it handle my route of twisty, potholed and bumpy B road that takes me to work every day any better than our WRX? Or my 205 1.9? Proper testing on proper British roads will reveal all.

Residuals? Look what happened to the Ford Racing Puma, a stunningly good looking, handbuilt, limited production rarity. Two year old 20000 milers have lost 50% of their original value. Whats gonna happen to the full production RS? Especially if the REALLY hot 4wd Focus gets announced?

Still ache for one though. This week anyway, will have changed my mind come next week as usual.

How much does the suspension and active diff setup cost on a touring car? Plus could you drive a touring car on a normal road with the bottom of the car about a cm from the ground. I think these 2 factors might have something to do with why touring cars can put 300bhp through fwd and road cars can't.

Although I wish we had decent enough roads and no speed bumps so I could setup my car in the same way

Unhappy

My guess, is that after initial resistance, there will a mass exodus to the RS Focus, especially from the standard Impreza turbo2000 people looking for an alternative to the new or newer shape Scooby.

The Scooby has been the £20K king but I fear its just been dethroned after what, 9 years?

Cheers,

Rich

I agree. I think the Focus will definately pinch some Subaru customers especially with Ford's huge marketing budget and it's better known brand name to average Joe Bloggs.

Although if the new Subaru looks anything like the images we have seen in the car mags lately then things could get interesting

@beefola, sorry m8 but ive heard that record too "on track yada yada yada" i dont drive on track, i drive in the real world where out right lap times are not the only thing that counts... im sick of hearing how the scoob beats this and that but im also sick of on track comparisons (especaillly as the driver is the most important part of a good lap time in comparable machinery) in the real world the scoob can still hold its head high, i know that there are better cars out there but the Scoobie does exactly what it says on the tin, fun, fast and safe everyday on any road

Cheers
