Golf is a relaxed cruiser with strong power delivery at lower revs but in turn not so much fun to throw around. GTI-6 is a little more rough and ready with a more rev happy engine and a nice chuckable chassis. I'd have the GTI-6 because I'm not ready for the whole relaxed thing yet!
Edited cause I was stupid enough to spell 'throw' as 'through'!!

VR6 + K&N = Unbelieveable. Add some spax and is well chuckable. Not that the GTi-6 is not great, cos it is. I'm not the biggest fan of golfs, but 2.8 litre = Nice.

VR6 handles like a house, with all that engine weight at the front. Also bloody expensive for bits. A shrick manifold is about £1500 306 has a EXCELLENT chassis. And feels pretty good. Golf tends to understeer to much. Have you considered a Corrado instead of the golf?
personally though I'd go for the 306. But depends what you want from a car.

Golf VR6 can touch 200bhp with uprated throttle body, AMD chip, K+N Induction kit and Exhaust, with that power they can cover 1/4 mile in under 15's seconds, so not bad for a fwd and mild mods. The induction kits can make the silly smooth V6 engine sound nearly as good a Scoob, but their handling it somewhat poor. It requires Konis, Ebiach springs and good tyres to even stand any chance against the Pug. They also drink fuel. Considering the quicker and great handling Corrado VR6 should def be on your list too.
If your into pure driving thrills, then maybe go for the 306 rallye instead, with suspension mods, they can be fantastic and quick for a hatch on the track (see CCC and their project car).

306 - every time - I've had one, they are fantastic - on lowering springs it could corner as fast as a standard scoob - it was unbelievable - so chuckable. Great power delivery, great 6 speed box and great standard brakes Having been in a VR6 it was no where near as good a drivers car.
Another thing - a 600 quid manifold will see it get 200bhp easy too - the engine is good for 200bhp plus and is very restricted in normal form.
It wasn't the king of the hot hatches for years for nothing!!

A mate had a GTI 6 another had a VR6, the pug whoops Vdub *** big time
Rip the air filter and resonators off the Pug and stick a cone filter on, the induction roar is feckin awesome I can highly recomend putting Koni's or similar on aswell, it handles very well in standard trim but does have quite a bit of body roll, uprated dampers cure all that! A really good car, you won't regret buying it

Ones French=poor build quality,BAD depreciation and only max pooer muppets drive them(no offence saxo boy)but i went USC and they were everywhere.
and the other one Germam=quaility quality quaility, has a vr6 engine!!! VERY low depreciation and the muppets aint got hold of them yet.
Btw im a bit biased as ive owned vw for years and they last for EVER!!!!!!

Not sure depreciation is an issue now either, since the car has been out of production for what, 2 years.
Ultimately depends on what sort of drive you want, having had both cars, they are soooo different in character...... doesn't necessarily make one 'better' than the other..... but I'd still choose the Pug every time.

Another vote for the Pug.
I had a 306Rallye and it was a hugely entertaining car.
The only plus the Veedub has over the Pug is the interior but let's face it, you don't buy a car for how it looks inside...do you?

Don't agree with this VW build quality line.
I had a VR6 Corrado, which when it went was fantastic. I had it trailered 3 times in 12 months. So I chopped it for a VTS which gave 3 years trouble free motoring.
I wouldn't touch another VR6. It's a lovely engine (much better than a scoob), but I like my cars reliable.

Haven't driven the VR6 but have owned a GTI-6 for last six months and can say hand on heart it is a fantastic car.
I very nearly bought a scoob, but bottled it on purely financial grounds at the eleventh hour due to not doing many miles a week. However, drove several scoobs with a view to buy and ultimately thought I'd be 'making do' with a GTI-6. Wrong!!!
It's huge fun. I'm still exploring it's handling limits, but so far I can't find them (and believe me I have tried). Fast, composed, discreet, comfortable, all the toys and loads around for peanuts. Mine is a silver T-reg, had 13k on the clock when I bought it from the previous lady owner. It is mint and still smells brand new inside. Only problems are a slightly sticky clutch and some obstructive down-changes when gearbox is not up to temp. Will get that sorted soon though.

Blip,
How much are T reg Gti-6's going for these days? If you don't mind me asking. I'm thinking of swapping my MY00 for one cause I'm not doing very many miles these days.
Saw a tidy T reg at Blackbushe auction last week - went for about £5500. The mileage (66k) is the only thing that stopped me bidding.

I think a dealer in Bury has one in, a w reg 306 Gti-6, one of the last ones with around 14k on the clock for under 10k now considering that these cars cost 18k new......
There are a few points that you need to look out for when purchasing a 306 GTi-6 thou, the first is that if its a Phase1 that it has been back in for the recall on the re-direction of the fuel lines as one or two had problems when they melted the service book should be stamped by the dealer, its a free recall though so taking the car back wont be a problem
Gearboxes.... i noticed with my Phase1 gearbox that it was a little... clunky to say the least now the phase 2 gearboxes seem to have sorted this problem out
I also noticed that the Phase 2 car seemed quicker than the phase 1 car i had (and taking into consideration that the phase 2 is a heavier car.....) and the equiptment levels were better on the phase 2 also! (plus it wasnt quite as tail twitchy as the phase 1)
Interior..... sorry, the phase one definately had the better interior all those bits of leather in the doors etc, then i got me phase 2 and it looked a little boring in comparison bugger
