Anyone had a high mileage audi S4?
#1
Hi folks!
just wondered what the long term ownership of the S4 would be like?
ive seen one forsale, its done 99000 miles, a few little scratches here and there.
its in a audi dealer and my cousin works there in sales, so buying it as a trade car couuld be a possibility but could it be risky??
it has full Dealer history etc.
whats any S4 owners views?

I presume its the Audi 100 S4 from about mid to early 90's.
I got rid of my S2 at about that mileage when I could not get a warranty and had to start paying megabucks for increasingly failing items (eg A/c rad & pipework £750!!).
The clutch is probably still the original so if you are keeping it for say another 50,000 miles then expect big bucks again.
The servicing prices are not too bad (especially at a specialist) and are not as often as the Scoob so running the car is overall slightly cheaper.
But be warned, with no warranty, you must have a rather large pot of gold to cope with the unexpected.

I quite fancy one too - but I heard that if the turbo's fail it's an engine out job and both turbos have to be replaced as a matched pair. I wouldn't buy a high miler without a solid warranty.

LeeP - I like the look of these also, & the old S2.
Problem is parts & upgrades I would imagine. Lets face it, we have loads of places we can buy subaru performace parts from, but I can't remember seeing much for an Audi.
Exclusivity comes with a cost.

Lee,
How much was the S4 @ 99K miles?
I would expect a decent amount under 20K?
In term of reliability you probably won't have too many problems as generally people have found on S4's that if the turbos go, the go pretty early on in the cars life. The rest of the engines internals are extremely strong so no problems there.
With that sort of milage I would guess it was a company car which was driven maily on motorways which would mean it was not driven hard to often.
You can get a chip for the S4 to take it to 310-330bhp but I have heard of turbo's blowing in this case.
Really with that sort of mileage it is a bit of a gamble, the car will most probably be fine but you never know (but then neither do you with brand new cars! ).
