My mate knows these cars inside out and back again there is nothing about these that he doesn't know. Any questions ask and I will forward them on to him. He has just fitted a 16 valve lump into his 8 valve because he crashed the 16 valve its fitted with 17"s lowered etc and looks the business he also has a cabriolet that is fitted with AVOs, G60 disc conversion and did have 17"s on it too until someone nicked the car He got it back stripped of its bodykit and wheels and ice

Davy,
Whaddaya need to know?!
I had an 89 Campaign - i hope it's not that car you've got, as mine was a minter! Sold it about 4 months ago for a Mk3 16v, which i have to say is a better car all round, suspension excepted.
If the steering's heavy then you've got one without PAS, which will serve you better on track, but a pain on the road.
But i think you'll have a lot of fun with it, they're very tuneable, and handle prety well too.
But anything else you need to know, ask away, as i've delved into most areas of Mk2's during my ownership. Also worth keeping in touch with ClubGTi, although the readership is, shall i say, somewhat younger than Scoobynet, and they get excited about slightly different things..!

Ran one for 85k; upgraded the suspension / air filter and brakes - superb and really rewarding - road use only though. Had good service from TSR / AMD / Brian Ricketts.
Into Mk1`s(8v)now and can recommend TSR; they`ve raced a `valver`.
Enjoy...

Just having it valeted will post up some pics later.
I think first thing I need are 2 good bucket seat, if anyone knows of any. I know this is not usually the first thing to do, but I am sitting to high in it (I am 6' 2") and I do not seem to fit in it properly.

Ahh yes - had an Oak Green 16v - with subtle mods - supersprint exhaust system and air box mods... original bbs alloys - big bumpers - rear lay flat wiper - rear diffuser (front spoiler of a CL modded), quickshift with VR6 weighted rod and the obligatory eyebrow spoiler... will try and dig out some pics

Davy,
I would say that the seat is the most important `performance` part you can fit; along with a good steering wheel; 4 / 6 point harness and a cage .....I have fitted Recaro SPG`s via welded in mounts and Willans harnesses - NB. get those with the aircraft adjusters as they are much easier in use.
In my Mk1 I had to use a 330mm dia. dished steering wheel in order to fit. I use it for sprints / hillclimbs etc and can recommend a very good fabrication company if you want a cage etc..
Recaro`s are expensive but well worth it; am on good terms with them and may be able to help reduce the cost a little.
Cheers

Depends if you have wider tyres than normal 185/60/14. I own a mint Mk2 8v that is completely standard, and the steering is not heavy. However it is under geared and not as direct compared to my 205 GTi, which is VERY heavy around town, but sublime im the twisties. A MY2002 steers way too light and wispy in comparison. Maybe you are just nannied by modern power steering?
IMHO Mk2 Golf GTi's are best left as Wolfsburg intended. VW did not spend oodles of time and money making the cars handle and ride for nothing. However, road use and fast road driving is not what is intended, and careful suspension and wheel/tyre work will pay dividends on the track, despite compromising on the road.
If you want heavy, my old Nova rally car took some beating, especially combining 6" rims with slicks, a snorty motor, a quick rack (2 turns lock to lock) with no PAS, and a plate LSD with plenty of preload. Traction was awesome, but the stering weight and kick-back of the wheel was appaling on tarmac.

Davyboy, apart from my T5 I have a mint MK2 8 valve GTI, lowered on wider (195) tyres and it goes well with a few tweaks, the steering isnt heavy but then again I spend 4 or 5 nights a week in the gym !
Have had 8 golfs, prefer the 8 valve
Power steering is for girls and TT drivers !
It isnt however as quick as a Diablo..........

Davy,
The 16 valvers can be a bit smokey, but its cheap to fix. If the steering is heavy, you hsould have bought one with PAS like mine!!
I run a mk2 8v, but I chose it as they are as quick bottom end, and they don't need thrashing to get the performance.
Also the 8v engines are a bit more solid and less smokey.
I might sell mine soon, and the previous owner added an exhaust, filter, adjustable suspension and Momo steering wheel, so it's more or less ready for track! Shame it's so clean really!!!

If you want some fun on the track, rather than out and out fast lap times, dont go bigger than 15x6 rims with 195 tyres on, it'll drift nicely into the corners and give good traction on the way out. Anything bigger or wider and the grip will be to much for the power and less fun will result. If you think the steering is heavy try a MkI with 2deg of neg camber dialled in and a quick rack. As Olly says we've all just been spoilt by modern cars with over light steering

I did notice at the ring that the regular guys who used golfs, were not fitting big wheels, but wide wheels.
I think the 14's will be just fine for now

I forgot to mention as well, get some decent brake pads & discs, and try and duct some air to the front hubs (from the foglight holes in the front bumper is a good place), because the factory golf brakes on Mk I's and II's are diabolical!
