Don't get a small engined one. 2.8 or 3.0 is probably the best.

Oh, and is either you or your wife a hairdresser?

Well, the 1.9 is **** slow so avoid them and in my opinion they are not a great looking car, but each to their own.

I had a Z3M roadster for 9 months, some previous cars included sti6 v-lt type R, TVR Cerbera, Esc Cossy.....etc....

The Z was nice to look at and went well in a straight line on dry road...but that was it. On a fast S bend in the wet it was quite lethal, the chassis is dreadful!....my advice is not to buy one at all!...I had great difficulty selling mine for a worthwhile price. If you want it for the pose then cool...but a drivers car it aint.

Well Peeps...

I currently have a P1 so will be sticking with that for a while me thinks...I have suggested the 2.8 but looks like I will have to tell her to be careful in it in the wet...Have driven one in the dry and it seemed OK though.

Never had a Bimmer b4 so could be a laugh anyway.

Cool

I think a lot will depend on your wife as to whether or not to go for the larger engined version.

Personally, my favourite would be the Z3M , the worst being the coupe version - what were BMW thinking????

Fun little cars they are, just remember it isn't front wheel drive so any enthusiastic wet weather driving could result in some rear end action if one is not too careful

What does she drive now and what are her thoughts on having fairly quick RWD car?

Well Michelle...

At the moment she drives a fiesta Zetec S..

I know....A front wheel drive car.....to a rear wheel drive is not the best idea.

personally, if she gets it I'm quite looking forward to taking off the ASC (Automatic Stability Control) to power slide the fukcer round some roundabouts...Hehehehehehe....mind you...she does drive the scoob but again...a totally different experience.

Best thing to do IMHO is to take her along and get a few test drives, don't just go for one test drive, do several, visit several BMW dealers and see if you can drive a Z3 for a day or so.

Make sure your wife puts her foot down so she can feel the difference in terms of handling of the car.

I will have a look for some more info on the Z series for you unless someone beats me to it

Some sites you might want to look at for info

BMW Z3 2.8 opinion by Motorbar
Auto.com reviews - note that at the bottom of the page there is a link for more reviews of the Z3.
Autochannel review of the 2.3

That is what I can find so far........

Michelle - curious if you've driven any of the Z-series hard?

I've driven a few, and as a driver's car none of the drop-tops come remotely close to the M-Coupe in terms of rigidity, and that makes a huge difference to the handling in a real-world situation.
Still very tail happy (E30 Touring rear suspension) - but some people like that.

The engine is astonishing, sounds like nothing else - I had no chance in keeping up with my friend's M-Coupe in a straight-line drag against my modified UK scoob (de-cat, PowerStation unichip and r-map)

It looks like a souped-up hearse, mind you - I wouldn't have one, but I'd rather be seen in one of those than the hairdresser versions!

I've owned a ZM Coupe for about 2.5 years and all I can say is that it's a fantastic car. Excellent handling and power. RWD a handful but challenging and more fun than a Scoob. It's gone out of production so hopefully will become a classic as it's rare.

Thanks

we went through this thought train last year, but decided to go for an MR2 roadster. With hindsight it wasn't the best decission. Sure the MR2 is great fun as a drivers car but 'her indoors' now hates the thing because she can't get the shopping in the back. Maybe the Z3 would have been a better option after all because handling isn't that important to her.

Ian,

My dislike of the coupe is based purely on it's looks, I have not had the pleasure to test drive one as of yet, but then I would honestly rather test drive an M3 or M5 than the Z3M coupe.

The Z3's themselves are lovely to chuck about, but I just wouldn't go for one.

I am always pleased with a tail happy car, so it sounds like I would actually have a bit of fun taking one of the coupe versions out
