What Do I Get Next ?

Cheers BBSparky, thats my Ibiza up for sale. The cheques in the post mate. But honestly I think its a good trade off between very quick acceleration, good build quality, nice interior and lowish running costs. The chassis may not be as fluent as the French hatches but the turbo power delivery is brilliant.
Economic circumstances are forcing sale now, I was contemplating upgrading to a late PPP'd 'classic' Impreza but now looking more likely I'll be downgrading to something cheaper and spending the change on the mortgage

Okay, going to sell the Sport. It looks lovely, drives great, nice ICE, grabs attention (even without the scoop ). But theres something missing . . . .
I have a few options, but not sure which to take.
1) Saxo VTS - Would be sensible as I am buying a new house. Would be newer than the Sport, girlfriend would be able to drive it (), but its a Saxo. Also, its cheap and would not require me to get additional finance. May get bored easily.
2) Nissan 200SX - The 'less sensible' option. Again, would be newer, GF can't drive it, max-grin factor, serious RWD backside-out action. No shopping space, minimal extra finance required.
3) Civic Type-R: The prefered choice, but max-finance required.
Anyone else had a similar decision to make, where its a toss-up between fun and practicality ? What did you do and was it the right choice in hindsight ?
Any options I may be overlooking ?

Get a 106 GTi instead of a Saxo VTS.
They are really cheap now and surprisinly quick.
Basically the same car but with different suspension, better trim, leather seats, fully loaded spec, better built, etc... and a *lot* less common.
I had one of these for 2 years and I loved it!
Looks good, goes very well and the handling is superb.

chuckster - I like your thinking, hadn't thought of it like that
Hmmm, the Leon/Ibiza will have a look into those, thanks
The CTR I think will be a bit too expensive, plus still too much of an attention grabber. I think I want to go for something a little less conspicuous.
Had a play in a 106 GTi, gearbox seemed a bit hit & miss to me, are they all like that ?

Another note to say - I had a 306GTi-6 that had a superb gearbox!! How about one of them - a bit bigger and no more expensive than those you've mentioned.....
As for the Ibiza - 1.8 Turbo VAG engine and 12,995 new - bargain

I think the 200SX kicks ****, of all your choices so far that'd be the one I'd have. Get alot for your money - engines a peach, RWD and nice interior (way nicer than the VTS and Peugeots).
No drinkning at country pubs though.........

DJ Dunk -
No, they aint all like that mate.
The gearchange in mine was very good, slotted in and out nicely, never missed gears, easy to use.
Doing a trackday in my mates Clio 172 tommorrow and gearbox is more "gatey" in that but I occaisonally miss the odd gear because it's a bit too tight.
How old was this 106 and how many miles?!
Should be good anyway...

You rang
Out of that lot if you can stretch to it get the Civic Type R. Bear in mind both the Saxo and 106 GTI will loose money far quicker so it might be worth the stretch now to save later. (2-3 month waiting list though, dealer told me that today)
The VTS/106 really are essentially the same car and it's down to individual preferance as to which people prefer. Give both a good looking over and a drive and choose accordingly. IMHO the Saxo looks better from the outside with its chunkier styling and I prefer the dash of the VTS. 106 has nice seats though and in england is less common. I see just as many GTI's as VTS's up here though??
200sx is a completely different car and having not driven, been in, or even been near one I'll not comment. Quick I believe
I think the 172 is in a bit of a no-mans-land. I don't think it's particularly worth the extra money over a VTS/GTI (for driver pleasure, performance, etc) but I do think that the Type R is worth the extra over the 172......if that makes sense

Rich - It was about a year old, only about 5k miles. Just seemed not very tight, if that makes sense. A bit, loose and sloppy
I'll have to try some others to see if it was a one off

I can;t beleive I'm about ot say this, but, Get the Nissan. Anything with 200+bhp two seats and rear wheel drive has got to be a bit of a laugh. Having driven a Saxo, if your feet are bigger than a 5 make sure you drive it in your socks, I can hit all three pedals at the same time with one of my size tens.

DJ - my cars up for £11,450ono, I'm 'somewhere in Surrey' so let us know if you want a test drive. Its mint, 51 reg and has over 2 years warranty remaining. Over 200bhp, so nearly as quick as an Octavia RS

CrisPduk - heel and toe mate
You get used to the saxo/pug footwell but if you have feet bigger than 10s you might struggle.
Re: the 5k pug: Maybe it had been thrashed. My VTS felt 'tighter' and newer at 30k than the 6k demonstrator I drove. At the end of the day these cars are french and can't take silly amounts of abuse!
