TURBOCHARGER ADVICE
My sister's garage has said that the turbocharger on her diesel 2 litre manual Vauxhall Insignia 2011 with 120k on clock needs replacing (no pulling power at all) £1200 quoted.
Any ways around this major expense? Is it feasible to remove turbo and run engine without one? Are they available second hand?
Advice appreciated, David

almost undoubtedly find a turbo for 1/4 the price but getting it to pair with the engine and ecu unlikely ,without strapping it all up to manufacturers computers/diagnostics - I suspect

Should be a fairly simple swap for any mechanic.

yep I did a turbo swap on a Mitsu Pajero
I bought the Turbo (new) off Ebay, it was obviously a Chinese OEM copy (TD04 I think)
but seemed fine when kit arrived
and was much much cheaper - and has been said a simply bolt on replacement
edited to add probably one of THE easiest jobs I have ever done on a car

That's really helpful so thanks a lot guys. Looks like you have saved my sis a few bob. And DevilDog for the ebay listing - looks genuine.

David please be careful here.
The turbo is a VNT type unit.
There are lots of these available as cheap recon on the likes of eBay. But they are many which have the VNT geometry set up wrong or not working at all. The result of this is the turbo will not perform and usually won't start to spool up until past 2800rpm which is terrible on a diesel where the turbo should be spooled up by 1500rpm, this especially applies on turbo with electronic actuators (I think the insignia is a vacuum capsule, if so its worth having this checked if there is no physical evidence of a turbo failure).
I've wasted days on trying to get eBay specials to work with no success, on two occasions I did get the mechanism adjusted so it did provide reasonable performance, but even then it was far from perfect. And the cost in labour with messing about outweighed the cost of a turbo from a genuine bonafide source.
That is why we only use BTN turbos as our supplier ( http://www.btnturbo.com ) Which is a official Garrett agent, and provided a proper warranty.
Talking about warranties..if the garage does the work and they supply the parts they are obliged to warranty parts and labour. If you give them a 2nd hand or dodgy rebuild to fit, then if it goes wrong you have no warranty with the garage so if it doesn't work or fails shortly after you with have to foot all the labour in getting it diagnosed and rectified again. The supplier of the turbo will just cover the parts cost, assuming they don't fob you off.
That is assuming the original turbo has failed and it's not a fault elsewhere like a blocked DPF or faulty EGR etc (left/passenger side intercooler hose is a favourite for splitting on these).
