Default What car.....

I am after sopmething that has a bit of status (not chav status like an Impreza though) I was thinking of the Jaguar XF or similar. Something that can fit four people in, is happy around town but then also happy if you stamp on the loud pedal (does not need to be ******* ripping performance as I tend to just take it easy)

My prerequisites are:

4 doors
Needs an ok size boot
engine no bigger than 3 litres
Petrol engine
Not a car driven by sales reps and drug dealers

Any suggestions are very welcome

What variant of Audi?.....I am swaying away from Audi as of the rep status.

Tidgy, I am assuming the Octavia is a joke?? I do not know anyone who has ever gone "I need a luxury car....choice between Jag XF and Octavia" lol

you never said luxury, your spec was,

4 doors
Needs an ok size boot
engine no bigger than 3 litres
Petrol engine
Not a car driven by sales reps and drug dealers

fits into that perfectly

What brand do you think has "status"?

The only Jag saloon (excluding the X-type, so XJ/XF) you can get with a 3l V6 is an XF - which is super-charged and will be no more frugal than a V8.

If you get an "executive" saloon with a little 3l engine, it just screams "I couldn't afford a proper one" or "I am a Sales Rep".

We need a bit more to go on.

Or just get a nice W124 Merc.

Ok, to be honest I could also go for a larger engine..... Diesel is a no-no though because of the road tax here in Holland for Diesels.

3 months road tax for a diesel here is about the same as 12 months road tax for the petrol equivalent and I would only be driving it a couple of times a week.

Regarding Skoda's, there is nothing wrong with them lol.....just not the image I going for lol.

Mercedes are also a viable option....we have an SLK in the family currently.

Anyone have any opinion on A8 are do they scream company car?

Only YOU can tell us what image YOU think a car has

Why do you care what other people think?

The E350 looks quite nice...... I was also considering pushing the boat out to a second hand Quattroporte but i dont think I could stomach the repair fees if it keeps breaking

Anyone have experience of the E350 or another similar Mercedes variant?

Really enjoyed my A8s. One was 3.0 V6 turbo diesel and the other 4.0 V8 turbo petrol. They look like big reps cars, but I like that as they blend in, there is nothing wrong in looking like a rep. Very quiet and smooth, luxurious, well equipped, well beyond A6/5 series. They handle surprisingly well, generally being the less image conscious self drive limo. Surprisingly good value too.

There is a 3.0 V6 supercharged petrol but it is rare.

It doesn't help that you've said nothing about age or price-bracket, but if the main criteria is to get away from the usual German rep-machines, Cadillac CTS, Chrysler 300C, Lexus or Infiniti.

You will struggle to find a decent "Status" cars that Drug Dealers won't drive.

Facelift Legacy Import BP/BL with the 6 speed and Si-Drive. Plenty of room, good on the loud pedal and quite discrete. Probably my next option after the Impreza.

I had an early BL 3.0R 5 speed auto. I changed it to the A8 3.0 TDI.

I am not sure what difference the facelift or import would make but there was absolutely no comparison in any respect imaginable that favoured the Subaru except cost. Not even remotely. The Subaru had 245PS and the Audi 250PS, Audi weighed more but was more agile and faster and FWIW had even more traction in snow than the Subaru.

JDM standard 280 PS, Si-Drive as per the STi (posh DCCD), JDM have better spec's, ECO mode (depending on model).

Interior looks the same, and it is like a low end repmobile at best even with leather. Nice compared to an Impreza. I don't think any Subaru is going to match the higher end Germans for luxury. The 5 speed auto was definitely a poor performer in the H6 but again the import Legacy has a four cylinder even if twin scroll. Some of the Audis have V8 twin scroll twin turbos of twice the power and 8 speed autos that make any Subaru autobox look 20 years out of date.

When I had the Legacy, I always thought it was nice "for a Subaru" and great in the snow on correct tyres but the gearbox, economy, performance, refinement and reliability were disappointing.

Perhaps it all depends on budget. OP also doesn't want a V8 monster.

I looked at some E350's this weekend but most of the taxi drivers here in Amsterdam have E variants so not sure now lol. Nice car though and big enough.

Which seater AMG's/sport variants of Mercedes are worth investigating?

So list of potentials are:

5 series - 530 and up
A6/A8
Mercedes
Jaguar XF
Will have a quick gander at Lexus.....

i ran the New E350 for 12 months then got the A45, the 350 was the AMGline model with all the bots, lovely car and 6.x seconds to 60, it flew.

I could even get a full size MTB on the backseat if i took the wheel off...

MB C Class is ok if you get the right wheels the AMG ones but a bit of a rep car.
the new GLE GLC are nice but mega bucks, you can if you shop around get the CLS 220 for 6k down 430 a month and that is Luxury
