Default Skyline r33

has anybody previously owned an r33 gtst/gtr?im wondering what there like to live with?.after i drove back from lincoln on the weekend and witnessing an r33 skyline embarras a bike its got me looking at them.in perticular a 560bhp gtst on pistonheads.i dont cover many miles as im away with work most of the time so my hatch is just sat there for weeks at a time.infact its coverd around 1500 miles since i bought it in febuary.i love my my hatch and my biggest concern if i went for a skyline is the age and reliabilty.the guy has owned it for 5 years and has every reciept since his ownership.its also had a lot spent on it.from what i can make of it,it just requires some cosmetics.really it would be used on weekends when im home.any advice or input greatly appreciated.cheers,ryan.

Depends whether you'll enjoy the RWD experience? Especially with that kind of power, it's going to be mighty twitchy compared to a Subaru. But if it's just a weekend car, then it could be perfect. In terms of age/reliability - you just need to bear in mind that these cars are getting on a bit now! Corrosion will probably have set in with particular areas of the car, strut tops, subframes and underneath, sills, arches etc. And an engine at 560bhp, I would want to see LOTS of receipts/paperwork for. The RB25 is a good unit if built up right, but could equally be a ticking bomb if the right areas haven't been addressed.

That being said, they're rare, sound awesome on WOT, and can be very fun to drive. I'd be interested to know how much it is? If you can stretch to a GTR, then that's the boy to go for, so you get an RB26, the kudos of having a GTR, more tuning potential (but expensive tuning), will hold its value better etc.

thankyou for your input.its up for 8.5k.stacks of reciepts etc.built and tuned by a company called rising sun.it has a few cosmetic issues on the rear arches but apparently thats it.obviously just the guys word so would need checking out.the engine has been forged etc.im looking at this gtst as its allready been built/tuned etc.i could stretch to a gtr but id then have to put a bit of money into it to get it to those kind of figures.my missus has had enough of me spending money on cars now haha.

There is a grey one around where I live and that's just shy of 600bhp and he says its very twitchy and needs to be handled carefully. what with that and a mate with a mark 2 Escort with a Cosworth lump pushing just over 450bhp its all good fun apparently lol

8.5k is strong money for a GTST..... you can pick up half decent cars with basic levels of tune for 3-4k. I understand the appeal of not having to put any money into it except the cosmetic issues. But in my mind it's a bit of a gamble buying a 560bhp car, which could potentially have issues (if not tuned right) and cost you even more. If the guys spent so much money on it and its wanted for nothing..and he has mountains of receipts, why hasn't he sorted the cosmetic issues himself? What's his reason for sale?

Also, a 560bhp GTST and a 560bhp GTR will drive very differently! Got a link to the car?

For around 12k you can get a R33 GTR N1 V Spec, original condition too. Will certainly hold its value better than a GTST

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1995-Nissa...item41977a9f91

Contemplating getting an R32 GTR next myself, like most old performance cars, the original unmolested ones will hold their value well.

I also think that the Skylines suffered the same thing the Impreza has done - of badly modified/styled ones that push up the prices of well kept ones, obviously not to the same extent as the poor old Impreza but I have seen a LOT of bad ones knocking about.

i had a gtst running about 300bhp and was fast, was like a missile on motorways and very comfortable!

One friend just imported a 33 GTR and is really nice to look at, couple others in a local club have high powered GTSTs and take them to the ring etc and are very fast and the sound is fantastic!

quite a big car really and heavy. THe gtst interior isnt great and needs the seats upgrading

mine had a clutch and a set of plugs/coils pretty standard stuff and they are easy to get power out of

That v-spec is lovely

I too am contemplating an R32 GTR, always wanted one! And yeah I've seen some terrible GTS-T's...you'll also find that most GTS-T's have suffered the same fate as most S14/A's and they've had the life drifted out of them and are held together with cable ties.

Yer the 'drifting' craze meant a lot of cars like the GTST got butchered

If I can sell my Impreza at the right price/right time then i may have a chance at getting one.

TBH i think a lot of people see a GTR and think big power, but i honestly think that driveability and condition is far more important, especially on the iconic R32.
Big power costs big money - which i definitely don't have

looked about 2 years ago about getting a cheapo 33 and build big spec etc, you could buy a phase 2 (different bumper) in reasonable nick for about 2.5k

at the moment lemons are reaching 4k! just because of the "scene" tax

I think I just did a little dribble over that one some nice JDM bits on that too. I agree mate, I'd rather have a standard-ish one just with mods to help reliability, like later steel turbos from an R33/34, better cooling etc and just enjoy it as it is. Looks wise, I think they're perfect standard. Perhaps a few little subtle carbon bits I'd add, but that would be it. If you can do it mate, get one!

Yeah I'm a 4 door fan, it's a shame they only come in non turbo, auto spec So at the very least they need a conversion and various parts to make them look cool. That one looks lovely, Milennium Jade paint too

My work colleague brought a Skyline last weekend. It's a r33 gts-t and it's a shed... Lol
There's not a straight panel on it.

It's still on auto trader.

Funny you should say that. I remember viewing a hawkeye at boys toys years ago.
Every car there was tatty. Me and my mate were cringing as a lad was there to pick up a supra, we couldn't believe the state of it.

R32-GTR, mild tune @ 400bhp, better brakes and light suspension fettle makes a superb road car.

The 4 door definitely exists mate, although a bit rarer. They don't come looking anything like that one though as standard! They need some nice parts to make them look tasty

Keighley motor hub? Hmm I would stay well clear. Look at the front bumper, steering wheel, handbrake gaitor. Looks like a complete dog, 66k mileage too , I would be suspicious.

Would love a tidy one though!

Why are R33 GTR's so cheap anyways?

I do fancy something 600bhp + with awd but still capable of some tail out action.

R33 GTR tick that box?
