Default Audi A4 AVANT 2.0 TDI S Line

Hi Guys,

Looking at possibly buying one of these.

What are the main things to look out for? Any issues?

Also, what is the S Ling Special Edition - What 'extras' make it special? I cannot see much while googling.....

Cheers

I've got it in my Skoda. Seems fine ?!

Audi Avants look cracking. Think S line is just a bit of tarting up. Wheels etc. look good though!

I thought the Audi 2.0 ltr was an OK engine

and agree - I believe the S line is just a cosmetic addon package - colour coding, big alloys, skirts, aluminium inserts in the cabin etc - looks good though (imo)

Int the Tdi the 140 is the better engine. No injector faults or dog to worry about like the 170.

Not sure but iirc the auto box not getting the best review but I'm a manual man myself

The diesel b7 had balance shaft failures and other common faults, and the diesels don't do the quoted mpg. Better with the 3.0 tdi if going diesel, they are the better engine with less dpf problems too.

It's the multitronic box that has common complaints, however, can't fault the s-tronic box, I'm a manual man myself, but once you've converted there's no going back.

My 170TDI

Injectors were changed FOC - if you get a 170 without the injectors done make sure they do it properly. My Audi dealership messed it up and cost me £500 to put right.

MPG isn't great. Mid 40s on a run I guess. It's not an unpleasant car to drive. Mines had DPF, EGR and EGR cooler removed.

Far cooler to get a standard looking 3.0TDI; wolf in sheeps clothing rather than all show, not much go.

I did look but finding a manual in the spec I wanted was taking too long.

Plus the 19s will be horrendous on a 3.0 just as they are on a 2.0.

Personally the 19s on a b8 are very pleasant compared to an older car where it's just gash.
Audi definitely thought about suspension with these big wheels standard spec.

Can't believe people are quoteing faults with the old PD engine thats no longer in production when all new versions are common rail. The OP hasn't mentioned a model year so none of you have any idea what engine it'll have .

If you are going to make comment about an engine's reliability...quote the engine code (can find out via the reg number easily enough).

i.e BUB, or BKD...or CAGA (later variants are four digits) etc.

VAG are constantly changing them from year to year and teh differnce between them can be quite alot (enough differnce to make it impossible to interchange parts between them). So its like saying don't buy a Ford because Vauxhalls are unreliable...because thats how differnt some of these engine variants can be.

Or to be more relevent to this site: saying the EJ20 is pants becuase the EJ25 is...you dig, bro?

Edit: for what its worth: Its the BLB engine thats the most notrious usually found in 2005 to 2008 model years.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all the replies.

I took the plunge and bought it. Its the 2.0TDI 140, so by no means quick, but decent MPG and more practical than my old M3 for the arrival of my new baby.

For the 'Special Edition', it seems like it has the 19" alloys (with 255/35 tyres all round), black head lining, and the Bang & Olufsen sound system.

I think it looks great, but like has been said, it's not that pokey.

Bit disappointed it doesn't have Sat Nav, even though it has a screen, mirror doesn't automatically point down when put in reverse like it did on my BMW, and the mirrors don't fold when the car is locked. Other than that, all good

That should have a CAGA, if I'm correct.

Haven't had much issues with them. just the usual DPF, which affect nearly all modern diesels. Usually just the pressure sensor though so an easy fix so long as it hasn't been dirven too far with it clogged.

What's a CAGA?

Also, how do you know when the DPF is/getting clogged? Therefore could destroy the sensor?

I don't quote any particular faults, I just say that Audi's are the most unreliable car out there judging by what I see week on week parked up on the hard shoulder
Also, the cars parked up are pretty much always diesel and are usually 09 and newer!

VAG group's build quality has plummeted to Lancia levels in the last few years.
It's taking a long time for people to realise.

Nice, simlar to mine.
The 19s are not special edition, optional extra.
The b&o again extra
The wing mirror going down in reverse, you can get it programmed to to it by gaining access to vdcs (like a hack into the extra features) there's loads you can unlock.
Get yourself on Audi-sport forum where you will find more info.

Hi bustaMOVEs,
I wonder what makes it 'Special Edition' then? haha.

Glad you said it could be programmed in! I'll have to do some research. I'll pop over the audi-sport too

CAGA is the engine version you've got...or should be. It'll be printed on the build sticker that's attached to the first page of the service book, or on the sticker under the boot floor; It'll also have a load of other codes that indentify the trim spec, gearbox etc. That'll include "special editions"

Re: DPF. Wrong way round: ANY sensor failure can cause the DPF to be destroyed (well, clogged to the point that'll cause you big bills to sort it): It'll let you know via the engine warning lamp and/or glowplug light flashing whilst driving. Keep driving with the engine warning lamp on and it can clog to the point the engine will not run. If there are no faults, the DPF should never clog in normal use.

Thanks for that Ali, found the sticker you mention. One of them is E0A, which says it isn't special edition, lol. The V5 says it is a Special Edition though.

So in theory, if the car is serviced well etc, and no light appear on the dash, the DPF should be ok? Other than taking the car for a good drive regularly, is there anything else to 'do'?

Thanks a lot

Yep; So long as the engine gets chance to get up to operating temperature and its driven above 30mph after that, all will be fine

Ali, could you possibly help..........

I've just had a major service done on my car today (longlife service plan).

After I was looking on the service interval menu, and saw it said:
- Oil Service 18,000 miles
- Inspection Service 19,000 miles

Stupidly, I then reset the oil service again to try to get it to read 19,000 as well (OCD I think, lol), and now it only says 9,000 miles until the next service.

Why is that, and is there any way I can get it to show 18/19,000 miles again?

Cheers

Hello Chris,
When you reset them manually im pretty sure it removes the longlife service schedule.
You will need diagnostic equipment to set it back to longlife.
I have a snap on Solus Pro which can reset all the service info from standard servicing to longlife and you can adjust the days mileage etc to what you want.
Cheers,
James

I know a topic for a new thread but those (oil?) service intervals seem crazy

Presumably there is a time limit as well?
