Default DPF/EGR delete...who to believe?

On a Vauxhall CDTi 150 16V lump.

Internet says do it, no probs.

Enquired locally and THEY say they WON'T do it as the car will probably never run right after.

Who is right?

Didn't think that engine/car had an EGR valve?!

After ours ate it's swirl flaps and Vx were utter merde at sorting it, I will never buy a Vauxhall again.

Yep, EGR, DPF, swirl flaps, it has the lot.

REALLY p*sses me off, all the crap on cars to cut down on diesel emissions...then you see buses, lorries and black cabs trailing a plume of smoke.

This is why I won't buy another diesel again. They just aren't fit for purpose.
A shame as when it works, that GM engine is one of the better ones.

Oh it pulls like a train and acceleration through the gears is awesome.

But I'm not sure I'd have another either.

However........what I WON'T be having is a gutless 1.0-1.4 turbo petrol......

We had ours four years (same engine); a bit dull after the R32 Golf but aril pretty good. It did sound bad though; the 335d that replaced it made a much better noise.

I had the 1.9 16V lump, it's a Fiat engine I believe. From memory on the forums most of the lads had removed DPF and blanked EGR with good results after remapping.

They all have EGRs, but some didn't have DPFs (mine didn't). Again this is from memory, but I think all the Signums have it along with all Vectra estates.

The Ford eco boost seem to be getting good press though, my neighbour has an older Cmax (or whatever the focus based one is called) that returns about 43mpg and seems to go well enough with loads of space when the seats are down, he used to tow a small 2berth caravan with it too, he's had it about 5yrs now with no trouble, I might have it off him for the Mrs when he trades up in a year or so.

Can't comment on the Vauxhall but my Audi A4 B7 170TDI has been running without a DPF, EGR and EGR cooler for about 2 years without issue.

The problem here is alot of guys in the trade learn from experience and find that the usual phrase of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" applies. There is the case where alot of vehicles that have had the EGR and DPF systems messed with have been bodged....like resistors to fool the airflow meter into thinking the EGR is working.

If its done by someone who knows what they are doing and is willing to put their hands up if they fudge it up, then its not an issue. The problem is there's alot people in the trade that are all mouth but quickly go quiet when they get it wrong and fob you off. And the good guys not willing to mess about with it are usually the ones who have to put the bodger's work right in the past hence their unwillingness to get involved.

I wouldn't remove the egr.

My transit has done 141k miles on its original egr. I started getting some smoke and thought it might be due a clean, took it off and it looked great. Got a blanking plate and blanked it off. No smoke but EML on due to air flow coherence issues and also noticed a load more knock on light throttle at 2krm.

I took it off again and stripped it right down. The transit uses an electric motor and gears to pull the valve open. All I could think was the reaction time was not right on it due to old dry cogs and dirt build up on them. I stripped it all out, cleaned it and re-greased the cogs. Put it back in, no smoke and runs great.

Incidentally mine was clean in the exhaust part, most seem to gum up but I drive my transit properly and it could have been a few k miles it looked that good.

Modern diesel don't like pooling about.

I did a Mondeo egr for some woman the other day and it was totally gummed up, but she never drives it hard.

Just blanking off an electronic egr could cause det as ecu will adjust afr when it senses no flow through egr. Only proper way is to map it out using someone like Evolution chips who did the DPF removal map on my Mazda 5 diesel. Older EGRs controlled by vacuum system (no electronics) seem to be ok to blank and don't throw up EML.
