I have an ambition to make a film on the Snake Pass, A57 out of Glossop to Sheffield. Everytime I watch TopGear, I'm always in awe of the excellent camera work they come up with for the trips. So, to that end, I've been out scouting possible locations for tracking shots last night
While I was there, I took along my still camera too, and captured a couple of shots, all that's missing is a scooby!
Hopefully over the next week while I'm on leave, I'll be getting some help to put together some following shots, external car shots, interior shots ect, to complete the filming
The road:

2nd corner of the snake out of glossop:

wrong way, but you get the idea

Chris i've been thinking about this for a while, sort of a promotion SMACS recruitment film - whatever its for.
Anyway i have some great ideas and would love to be really involved in this.
lets make this really proffessional looking with (for once) a decent soundtrack that appeals to everyone.
A guy at work has a full size recording studion at home and perhaps could help.
has anyone got a decent cam? i can ask about that too?

Thanks for that Chief, we've got mine and supers cameras for now, and my video work is coming along nicely
As for the soundtrack, its got to be "king of snake" by underworld
This isn't going to be a SMACS RECRUITMENT FILM, just a personal project I thought I'd share with you all
We can use all the help we can get though, and will hopefully be out on tuesday evening getting some shots in the bag, your more than welcome to join us

From: Heart of Midlothian FC aka Hearts have the nickname "The Jambo's" - therefore I'm a Jambo too.
Can I come too??
Im used to filming my brother at his Downhill Mountain Biking. It usually involves me balancing on a 45 degree, loose surfaced slope, holding my camcorder trying to spot him amongst all the others wearing exactly the same Fox Racing jersey and full face helmet.
Spotting two Scoobs on the Snake pass will be easy!!

By the looks of it Sticky only The President and Vice president are allowed to take part - and definitely no Classics

Sounds like fun mate.
However................keep watching Top gear and 5th Gear.
I saw a film crew with a 911 turbo filming at the top of the Snake (near the reservoir) about 4 or 5 months ago. I remember it was a Wednesday afternoon and it was raining. They all looked around as I screamed past, late for a meeting in Sheffield!!
Just wish I knew what/who was being filmed.
If you need any help, let me know.
mad

LOL @ andy, thanks
Peter, where the hell have you been?
Don't tell me your finally busy working?
You up for a play next sunday? You know you want to, and different roads than the ones you drive everyday too
Been out tonight to get the first of my external shots in the bag, I'm going to knock together a rough cut in a while, new faster pc is downloading dv vid as I type
Saw an EVO FQ340 scream past me right at the end of the snake, then met him later at Glossop Tesco
Nice chap, but complained how fast the EVO was
Film up later if your still awake

I'm ppp'd up too, covered in SMACS stickers and undoubtedly faster than Beefy!
Been off line for a while. Living at my parents house while our new house is built has been a right pain for getting on the internet. Have also been busy at work.
Move into new house next week though which means i'll be on here more often and...................may even get around to having that SMACS BBQ!!!

Can't come out next week though. Will be too busy packing etc.
Peace

imprezarb5, although nice pictures, that is still hijacking a thread
Pete, pissed as usual, although I've managed to make this:
http://www.scoobysmacs.co.uk/Videos/snake%20test.wmv
after a whole bottle of 3 emu red wine
RIGHT CLICK SAVE AS 16.7MB.
Bit of background:
The filming of me was done tonight on the snake, around 20:30. It was a duller day than last friday when I filmed all the other cars, which was bright and sunny
I've kept my film at the right speed, but increased the speed of the other cars by 2x to make it look real
Obviously, it's quite hard to film yourself driving past, so I've filmed other cars instead
I've got at least another 4 different angles to cover before the film is even begun, but it gives you a general idea of what I'm after.

Looks good CW, so great shots there.
Comments:
- Excellent main camera view but would prefer a bit more of in the cabin?
- would like to see lots more camera angles on the car (roof, bonnet etc)
- pan and zoom at the same time - DO NOT DO IT
- Music? I thought my speakers were fcuked when it started!!!!!
- tripod needed for pan shots to make them smoother
- safety : flashing speed camera sign and solid white line disipline MR CW!
- More scooby sounds! I realy want to hear that burbble.
Other ideas for shots:
- fixed camera position with car going past. have car passing from front and car passing from behind to edit together at point where car passes for seemless driveby.
- camera on pole over road. car goes underneath. pole removed before next car arrives.
- front wheel shot during the turns etc. Nice to see some movement.
- driver shot in the car doing the work.
- two cameras to show passing of cars from front, flick to rear to see car in distance. Would need two camera running unless you could persuade granny in her Nissan Micra to reverse back up so you can swap camera position.

In answer to your comments and suggestions:
more camera angles to follow, as I said in the previous post, that film was just a rough draft, taken over 2 sessions of filming. I've got plans now to film, bonnet, roof, side door near and offside (with front wheels in view for movement) and finally driver shots, doing very little movement
panning and zooming, difficult to do, especially with the crap system on my camera, good point
Music, sorry, it has to be that
tripod is not a problem for panning shots, got a really good one here
safety: flashing speed camera sign? Don't know what you mean by that, and that bit of white line I crossed overtaking the megane is a pita
as it comes up too soon no matter how hard you accelerate at that point, bad road design methinks.
scooby burble will come later, I've to sort out my microphone and maybe tape it to the rear of the car.
ideas for shots:
fixed cam position: I always find your first suggestion naf on the telly, although I've included a couple of non-pan shots on the above film, much prefer the car to dissapear off frame, then cut to different shot entirely.
camera on pole over road? I'll leave that to you
front wheel shot/driver shot covered above.
I thought of including a third, non-scooby in the film, sort of, this is what it's like being passed by us kind of shot
Easy enough to do, could borrow the wifes motor for that. Can discuss
Thanks for the input.
