I have booked Hau Hin and Bangkok for Christmas. I already have my hotel for Hau Hin booked and its the Jaidee resort but I need something good for Bangkok. I'm going for five days with my missus and my daughter and I'm looking for a minimum of four or 5stars.
Does anyone have any good recommendations?

I was looking at this hotel and the room was twin executive plus suite

We stayed at the Pathumwan Princess, nice hotel but you could not pay me to go to Bangkok again.

Whats wrong with the place? I have booked Bangkok so my missus and daughter can go shopping and so we can visit Safari world

We went in Dec 08 and should only have been staying there three or four days, we'd been touring other parts of Asia for the previous month, Thailand was the last place before coming home. The day we should have left was the day anti-government protesters took over the airport, all flights cancelled.
A nice man from the Foreign Office came to the hotel and told us not to wander outside (luckily huge MBK shopping centre is connected to the hotel) because they could not guarantee our safety.

Not much fun when you don't know what's going on and when you are likely to get home. Initial reports were saying we wouldn't get home before Christmas, this was another month away, but we were fortunate to 'only' be stuck there a further seven days.
It caused so much hassle, at our end and also back at home, oh and you're not covered on travel insurance under these circumstances. Eventually we were given a police escort to a military airport, I've never been so glad to get on a plane in my life.

The thing is these protests had been going on for a while before our trip but we had absolutely no idea, travel agents had never mentioned it.

The protests are still going on now.

Yeah I read and they are sending the army in, company I book insurance with has lots of extra add on's for civil unrest and other things so I think I will take them

I'm sure you'll be fine, thousands of tourists are going there all the time with no problems, we were just unlucky. Still wouldn't get me back there though

Been to Thailand 3 times now with the mrs I'm sure you'll enjoy it ! Went to hua hin on the second visit and stopped for 2 weeks there ! Nice place and seems to be where all the locals go for holidays . Didn't eat much at the hotel as there was plenty of options for eating out with the locals really cheaply

We had similar experience in Afghanistan. Not that we went there for a holiday but we were just passing to get to India. Stern people in full costumes and AK47 each were all over Kabul airport like flies. British white women passengers instantly covered their top heads with whatever they could find. I didn't know what to do, so I just got out of the plane with my two kids and a husband. My youngest was only 5 month old infant then, and it had just kicked off there in Afghanistan.

Getting on to connecting plane was a nightmare! Plane came hours late, and then Afghani pilot started to get people on by screaming - "Delhi! Delhi!". But once the plane was half full, he said- "I've changed my mind. Everyone down! I'm going to Amritsar now". Whaaaat??? All passengers were in such a limbo! But after getting the passengers off, he discussed something with his crony, and started to scream again- "Delhi! Delhi!" Once we got in, the pilot was drinking alcohol while flying the plane, so was his co-pilot. Then when the plane was entering NDH, it started to drop like hell, as if the plane itself was p!ssed! I asked the pilot if everything was ok. He said- "All good, maddam. I too don't want to die in a plane crash, don't worry". God, I couldn't believe that we actually reached India alive!

Two days before us leaving India, Mister got to see on telly that Kabul tin shed airport had just been bombed, Christ! Our Afghani Airways flight back to London was cancelled, but luckily we could get ourselves on a BA flight. Now that non-stop journey in a comfortable BA plane was fantastic!

Lesson: Please, never ever travel with a crappy airline; especially if you have a family with two under 5's and even older. It may save you some money, but it's not worth it.

On that cheap airline, we also had some British youths to put up with. Everyone slags off the youths of today. Youths of the 90's were well rowdy, and much worse imo! They were getting p!ssed like anything, having sex in the plane toilets, puking all over, sparking their lighters under the plane seats and all that. It was horrible.

My son and the daddy are off to Thailand in April. We tease them that they both will come back with a ladyboy each for themselves. Anyway, once they've been, I'll ask them how it went for them. It's daddy's 7th time there, so it can't be too bad, I suppose.

Haven't been for years but stayed at the Shangri La twice. Really nice hotel that is very centrally located, over looks the river and has a decent sized pool. Stayed in a couple of other Shangri La hotels in other places and have always been happy with them.

I went about 18years ago as a stop-over on the way to Pattaya. Stopped in the Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok.

Nice Hotel (probably re-fitted by now). But memories of the city aren't so good; busy, lots of pollution and people constantly hassling you to buy something off them.

I stopped off in Hong Kong whilst on the same trip; Different class of city.

That said, I didn't think much of Pattaya either.

I've stayed there as well, it was better than the Shangri La by a small margin.

They couldn't. When they ran their fingers down the front of their top head, their forehead and eyes came in a way, and then their nose and mouth. They could only cover their top heads with a pocketbook or a handkerchief. To cover their heads to its lower extension, they would have needed a towel at least, with two holes for the eyes. They didn't have towels handy at that time.

I stayed in the Banyan Tree in Bangkok for a few nights before going to Hau Hin five years ago. It was fantastic and has a great rooftop restaurant. They organised a private transfer from the airport which was great and well worth the extra.

The Mandarin is too expensive at that time of year for me as a bog standard room is £380 a night where as I can get a 2 bedroomed suite for half that price in some of the 4 and 5 star hotels.
