The documents also chronicle GCHQ's sustained struggle to keep the large store of sexually explicit imagery collected by Optic Nerve away from the eyes of its staff, though there is little discussion about the privacy implications of storing this material in the first place.

Yes, heard them talking about this on the radio yesterday and the guy from Yahoo was virtually apoplectic with rage over the whole thing...... whilst it is not good surely people aren't surprised.... this is the country with more CCTV than anywhere else, a government that wants to control the population and a a clear penchant for snooping on its people! Another 25 years and North Korea will be asking the UN to free us from the oppressive regime of Chairman Cameron

Good article on why the 'nothing to fear, nothing to hide' argument is wrong:
If You're OK With Surveillance Because You Have "Nothing to Hide," Think Again

Everything, *everything*, you do online is monitored, whether by the NSA, your ISP, the government, the website you joined, Facebook, advertising bots, your credit card company, Google, etc.
This has been the case since the dawn of the internet.
And one should treat the internet and what they do on it accordingly (including dancing around naked in front of a webcam).
Whoever thought it was ever any different is a moron.

Isn't that an invasion of privacy though?

They can still listen and record what's going on in the room and then of course there's google street cam and google earth, that's just the stuff we know about, they can probably check the density and flavour characteristics of your farts and tell you what you ate for dinner last night.

Have to say as well there's a fundamental difference between data collection and data analysis (most of which is done by computers anyways).

The NSA or Google can remotely switch your camera or your recorder on on your phone at any time.
In reality the NSA could spy on all smart phones, everywhere.
The more technology develops, the more intrusive these spying techniques will get.
