Paul Gascgoine - Hero, Zero or Meh?
As Gazza reportedly enters rehab for the 8th time, what are your thoughts?
The number of chances he has had to clean up his act make him look like a (not funny in the slightest) clown IMO.

As a Spurs fan, he'll always be a legend in my eyes, even if Spurs weren't the club for him to really fulfil all of that potential. He seemed to take a huge nose dive professionally and personally after that cruciate knee ligament injury in the 1991 FA Cup final, scything down Gary Charles. I think it's utterly tragic what he's doing to himself but how many chances do you give him?! Unfortunately to a generation of fans he'll be remembered for all the wrong reasons.

If it's any consolation, Gary Charles is now also a washed up ****-head and got prosecuted for wife beating several years ago.
Bit of a pattern.
Edit - but at least Charles seems to have turned his life around as coach at Lincoln.

It's just wrong, but then you don't know what's going on in that loaf of his. You go from being adored by thousands week in week out, become super famous then your career stops. I wouldn't have a clue what that feels like. I know one thing, I wouldn't swap 10% of my privacy/sanity for 10% of his talent with a football if it meant being 10% more like he is now. I'll be gutted when they announce his death but won't be surprised. He won't make 50 that one. The best way to help him is to let him go. Sadly.

Biggest mistake he ever made was saying no to Fergie, Fergie would have sorted him out, an abundance of talent but just couldent deal with it.

In fairness, bi-polar is just a new name. It's manic depression and I know someone who's had it since the 80s. They are neither rich nor famous.
Regardless of that side note, his lifestyle isn't helping him fix that.

It's not a side note, it's central to his issues, but it's true he doesn't help himself control the disorder with his lifestyle and that's because he can't. Alcoholism and drug addiction is a disease, too.

He's been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, Maz. Do you know much about the illness? It might be worth reading up on it and how it affects people. I can assure you it's not the preserve of the (once) rich and famous. It's a killer.

In Gazza's case and perhaps in those of others who are in the limelight (I feel) there is an element of attention seeking. I'm not saying they're being disingenuous with their illness claim, it's just a natural reaction I feel. Someone once said that the only thing rich and famous people value more than money is attention.

I am aware of the devastation that mental illness causes and know about bipolar. The height of the high is matched proportionally to the lowness of the low. Some sufferers even go as far as saying the high is so good it's worth being bipolar. Unfortunately this is only asserted when the sufferer is cresting that wave of euphoria only bipolar can provide.
