Default Tried to buy a TV and, NOW I'VE GOT ONE!!!

...none in stock anywhere in the UK, apparently.

This is what I was after: http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/tv-dvd-...39115-pdt.html

Decent enough set, decent price. (Top of my budget anyway).

Anyone suggest an alternative?

I'm NOT bothered about 3-D...if it's there, OK, if not, not.

Same with smart TV.

But most stuff at 50" or above seems to have both anyway now.

I did look at this one: http://www.sony.co.uk/product/tv-126-50-lcd/kdl-50w656a, but have been put off by reports of poor moving images, lack of proper support on the problem, and what appears to be misleading statements from Sony.

The Samsung?

It's the only one I can find with a full set of OD services.

I COULD go Virgin TiVo but don't feel like giving those thieves another penny at the moment.

me too, they are the only ones that have all terrestrial catch up aps.

the 3d is very impressive as a feature too.

im very impressed with the smart features too. it actually influenced my next tv purchase which was a smaller smart tv for my bedroom.

another feature is timeshift where you can pause live tv like sky plus and also the facility to record tv just by connecting a hard drive, also you can stream films via wifi.

Does it do skype. Just bought camera for girlfriends daughter Samsung, a 50 " modern example

It wasn't on the list of Samsung compatible tv's after all, and their bluray players don't do it either apparently
Both my panasonic tv and player will do it

If you have (or are going to get) wifi, you should definitely get a smart TV.
I can't see the point of skype on a TV though, unless you don't have it anywhere else. More suited to a Tablet, PC or Smartphone IMO.

I have the UE46E6300. Love it. Streams everything (photos, films and music) from my Rasperry Pi (running miniDLNA) up in the loft perfectly and the on demand services work great too. Mounted mine on a cantilever bracket now. Don't use 3D much, but it's nice to have it there for when I do. I bought mine from WAE+ before they went under

I don't see the point of skype on such a small screen, bit pointless

I do have it on the phone even, but it's difficult to get the whole family on the screen

I'm hoping this drops to around £1000, pretty special.

I'm put off Sony's due to misleading advertising.

The set I WAS looking at, KDL50W656, was advertised on their, and other sites as having "Motionflow 200". It hasn't...Sony admit it has only "LED Motion".....but apparently, according to TS and ASA, it's OK to mislead people like that.

For that reason alone I'll buy Samsung or LG.

this could be a nice gaming tv. reviews point to moving image issues though.

Just don't get a Plasma as the will buzz at some stage! I've seen some bad colour saturation too from sub £1000 LED TV's. LG are terrible for gaming on but like Samsung have great 3D.

TBH there's only the W905 that ticks all the boxes, the nearly affordable W805 could be interesting, it gives me 3D, Smart, insanely low lag input and USB that plays MKV's and NTFS formatted flashdrives unlike 2012 Sonys but even the picture on this gets average reviews.

i chose LG tv (best picture from every angle) and use a samsung bluray player or ps3 to do the obvious as well as catchup bases being covered

To be honest some of the best screens I have seen are Panasonic Plasmas. I think it's all down to personal preference rather than facts and figures. I would not be buying a TV at this point in time. Too many technologies round the corner will become much more affordable ie 4K and OLED.

In Dec 2012 / Jan 2013 when we bought 2 new tv's that were going in rooms where we needed a great viewing experience from a wide range of angles, in the under a grand price range (per unit), LG pissed all over everything else, especially similarly priced samsungs, which were fine when sat straight on at the tv, but lost the battle beyond that

that was in the shop demoing, not reading specs alone

Funny you should say that.

But I avoid Samsungs becuase they were caught giving reviewers Monitors and TVs with Samsung made LCD panels inside, but subsequent production models sold to consumers had the screen manufactured by other makers. The maker isn't the issue though - the problem was the the screens with the other make panels inside didn't perform as well (colour shift, black levels, backlight bleeding etc.). This caused savvy buyers to check serial numbers and use the engineer mode as they used to denote what panel was inside and return panels that weren't made by Samsung.

Samsung and their retailers obvioulsy didn't like this, so then changed the serial numbers and the engineer mode so that it would no longer show what maker of panel was inside.

So instead of comming clean, they papered over it and actively prevented the consumer from searching for the better performing panel. Dirty tactics IMO.

I'm not saying Sony are any better, but Samsung are far from being whiter than white with this either.

A lot of Pannys suffer from (60hz?) flicker and buzz but the picture quality other than that is astonishing, ink blacks and decent movement, posterization is sometimes a problem but it went on mine after a time.

The LG panels are great but extremely bad for gaming which is very strange as new Sonys use LG passive 3D panels and are the all time great TVs for twitch gaming.

Ali: did ASA and TS get involved? If so, I bet they said it was OK........?

The Samsungs seem to be the only ones with a full set of OD services, BBC ITV Ch4 and Ch5.

Is that worth anything?
Or do I give that toothy clown more of my money, get TiVo, and just buy an LG?

Each to their own I guess.
It's probably not really a deal breaker one way or the other.

No they didn't, it was (still is) a global issue, so people in other countries were affcted too (USA included). To be fair its not just Samsung either (although they were were the first to be caught red handed using bait and switch tactics, and seem to be the most prevelent) Although I'm sure people complained, and Samsung did reply to complaints/criticisms from magazine reviewers saying their product's qouted specification hadn't changed and they do source components from varying manufacturers to meet demand. Which was true, but they didn't acknowledge that reviewers were being given and reviewing products that contained different internal components to the ones that were being sold to consumers which by magical coincidence also seemed to perform better in back to back tests.

Have a google of "samsung panel lottery", and you'll see what I mean.

Smart TV? To be honest I don't use it, so can't comment. I just use Virgin on-demand or stream to the TV via my Net-top (which is bolted to the back of the TV ).

Channel 4 signed an exclusivity deal with Samsung for 4OD*, not sure how long the deal lasts, but if 4OD is an absolute must then you'll have to stick with Samsung for the time being.

*As mentioned here: http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/tech/new...ony-vs-lg.html

I did mention earlier that if you have a ps3 and were intending to hook that up then all OD bases are covered between that and any smart tv, or at least a wider range. Alternative is to get a Samsung bluray player with OD, and an-other brand of tv, smart or otherwise.

Of course if you have no intention of hooking up a PVR, Bluray unit, or PS3 into said new telly then fair doos, but yes Virgin media do catchup and pvr - we have virgin plugged into our LG, sometimes the OD content isn't available immediately after the programme has aired via virgin catchup, so on a couple of occasions i've jumped on the LG Remote to browse to the iPlayer app etc
