Default Any Bantam experts/vets on here?

Hi all,

Just wondering if there are any Bantam experts on here?

We bought 3 in July this year and I am worried about one of them. She is just over a year old and a strange growth has appeared on her beak? I have been searching the net but still really haven't found an answer so I thought I would try here on the off chance.

Any help appreciated.

We just got her out the coop to take these piccies:

If you needed a cat advice, I'd say look no further but ask thenewgalaxy. He can also help with dental issues.

having has a few hens ourselves, we had rangers and rhode island reds, I don't recall seeing anything like that when ours were ill, has it been pecked by the others as if they are new they may be sorting out the pecking order themselves....

That looks like fowl pox to me but I have never experienced it on my farm so my knowledge is limited I'm afraid. Fowl pox is usually on the comb, but I suppose that the lesion is partly on the comb and at the base of the beak which makes it likely to be that. I would defiantly treat all your birds with Denagard which is a very good antibiotic, simply to be on the safe side as they may pick up something else and it'll just give them a little boost. Sorry I can't be of much help.

edit: After googling and doing a bit of research, it does look a bit like fowl pox and if it doesn't develop down into the throat, then your bird should recover in about 1 month. If you're not going to take her to the vet, then I would buy a bottle of Denagard off the Internet (it's about £60 for 1 litre) and treat them all with that.

Hiya thanks for the reply.

We didn't think it was fowl pox as we couldn't find any images which matched. There is nothing on her comb just as you can see its on her beak. I looked in her mouth tonight which was clear. She has just had her first molt which really made her pale but she is coming out of that now. She is eating fine but we have noticed she has becoming very shy of us but we put this down to the molt.

Our other thought was maybe a tumor or a fungul kind of infection.

The other two are fine though and don't show any sign of the same thing. Would we have bought her like it? We thought it was a just a scab at first but last couple of weeks it has just grown and I noticed the little spot appeared just next to the big one.

I was going to mention fungal but I wasn't sure myself to be honest. I have seen something very similar to your pictures with lesion's like that but on their feet.

If the birds had it down their throats and inside their beaks then it could be Trichomoniasis, but like you've said, their throats are clear so I am certain that it is not that.

Sorry I can't be of any more help and I hope you can get it sorted and that she recovers.

You obviously are not intelligent enough to know the difference between a Bantam and a Chicken? How about a little clue? One has enough meat to warrant eating

I take it it is actual flesh and not a build up of discharge from the birds nostrils?

I can't say I've ever seen I growth like this on a hen before, I've just skimmed through all of my poultry books and can't find much in these either, the only reference I could find was about combs swelling but these were linked to serious disease and your bantam looks in good nick appart from the growth.

Any change in the birds droppings?

Is it back in lay after the moult?

Always best to start with the basics I find

There are a few knowledgable people on the practical poultry forum if you're not already a member.

I have to say I haven't tried to remove or squeeze it due to fear of it bleeding? or something terrible happening and making it worse.

She seems to have finished her molt but still does seem a little shy still whereas before the molt she was a little more confident.

She is eating fine and looks beautiful with her new feathers. We believe she has started to lay but not a 100% due to the other two just started to lay as they were still chicks when we got them.

My partner is going to check her droppings tomorrow so will report back.

Here are some piccies of the other two for anyone interested:

Nice Pekins

I have about 15 Pekins at the minute, not too keen on the frizzle ones but they're certainly different
