Horrible! I feel your pain!

So far I've only had to see one dog put to sleep, the Labrador/Collie cross I grew up with. I was 15 and devastated for weeks. I did have a German Shepherd rescue that because of personal circumstances had to go back to the RSPCA (I had to move somewhere I couldn't have a dog) which killed me and we had to re-home our Black Lab in NZ when we moved back to the UK, as to ship him here, would have cost the same as all four flights for the family!

We now have a Husky and he's coming up on 3 years old, just struck me today how old he has got and that the years are so limited with dogs

im in tears as I write this. had him as a 7 week old ball of fluff. he has always been a sickly dog, bringing up bile 2-3 times a week on average. he's the first dog I've had so its a learning curve, sometimes a steep one. mentioned it to vet a few times and didn't really seem concerned. last june while he was on a walk I let him off the lead and he was chewing what I thought was grass. within half hour of getting him home he was violently sick, bought up the contents of his stomach, then for the next 3-4 days could not keep anything down, was at the vets daily having injections. he slowly picked up but had lost a bit of weight. he has never really been the same since. he was long haired, and even today the vet said he hid his problems very well due to his glossy coat. he had been sick on Tuesday and bought up some blood so went to vets, who gave 2 courses of tablets and said they thought he might have a stomach ulcer. I have enquired about this and the sickness can be bought about by excess stomach acid, which in turn can lead to an ulcer. in the last few days he lost more weight, a kilo in 4 days. vets done some tests this morning and confirm he had internal bleeding. they wanted to keep him and put him on a drip. went back 2 hours later and he had deteriorated loads. vet reckoned no amount of money/insurance would save him and questioned if he would last the night. cant believe he has gone, massive hole in our lives already. all 3 of us, the misus, me and the lad are gutted, eyes red raw trying to console each other, the only plan at the moment is getting pissed to try and blank out the pain

trouble is, I don't know if its same with other vets practices, there's no continuity, every time you go its a different vet, the previous one has left for what ever reason.

I feel your pain mate, been there quite a few times as we've had dogs in the family for more years than I care to remember.

When all's said and done, the dog isn't just a pet, it becomes part of the family unit which is why it's so hard when they go.
I'm dreading the day our dog Miley goes, she's the first dog our kids have grown up with and I know they'll be devastated when the inevitable happens.

Chin up mate.

Nik.

I feel for you buddy , I dread the day that happens and he is only a year old. The thing is, no matter how bad a day you've had at work they're always pleased to see you.

I feel for you bud. I've had to make that goddamn awful decision with two of my own dogs. Chin up mate and don't beat yourself up, you did what you had to do.
Time is indeed a healer. You cant replace the fella you just lost but getting another dog speeds up the healing process. there's thousands of dogs out there needing good homes.

thanks for the nice replies.... set me off again.

he was always the first person I saw in a morning,, the last I saw at night. no matter what time of the night I came in from work, or how crap the day had been he was always there with a wagging tail, excited to see me and we always had loads of fuss. he even knew the time, in the summer months he'd go and sit at the gate at 3;50pm, knowing I was .home at 4.
I feel honoured to have share his life with him. he will always be a part of me and im so glad I've got loads of photos of him on my phone

Aww that's so sad, I'm really gutted for you :-(
It really breaks your heart to lose a loved pet, that are a part of the family.

I loved my little dogs to bits, more than I have ever loved another person! My baby boy is nearly 9 and I do worry about him getting older now. I can't even contemplate anything happening to him.

One of mine is sick quite often, just bile, but vet didn't seem concerned, and the other gets stomach pains until she's sick if she's not fed 3-4times a day, which the vet agreed with me was probably excess stomach acid. Again, not concerned.

Sorry to hear this.

The bile thing is quite common in some GSDs.
Its advisable to split meals into am and pm so the stomach always has food in it. If it still happens split into 3.

Ellie, try bionic biotic. Only give a tiny dose you don't need to give the full dose - just 20% will do. You will still need to feed 3 times a day but it will help regulate their metabolic rate a bit. Split the 20% over the first and second feed. Don't put any in the third.

he was always a funny eater, tried him with just about every dog food you could imagine, wasn't until about 3 yrs ago got him onto a collard brand that hypo allergenic (if that's the correct spelling ?) loved it. yet 2 weeks ago just stopped eating it, wasn't sure if he was bored with it. tried again with loads of different foods but no interest.

obviously too late but have read up on the net that excess stomach acid can lead to ulcers in dogs. leading to weight loss, loss of apetite, DONT let your dog suffer the same

Oh Man..

Feel so sorry for you..

Im a GSD owner myself, and always have been.... There is no other breed for me...Luckily mine have always reached a good age,7 years is no age for a good dog.. But it must have been his time to go,what a bloody shame..
In 2011 we lost our big lad,13 yrs of age and i was in pieces... He had his time but it was no consolation,i was absolutely heartbroken and swore i would never have another as the pain was so great..

That lasted 3 months and i was back looking for another GSD on the GSD rescue site..

We have had our Stanley 2 years now and although i remember my last GSD with brilliant memories our Stanley takes up all of our time and he is a complete bugger most days,so onward and upward..

Any dog will leave in hole in the family,IMHO a GSD leaves a crater... Such brilliant dogs,we (i) get so attatched to them that when the time comes to depart that it seems worse than losing a family member..

Chin up lad.... You can do a homeless GSD a grand service soon....

My heart goes out to you.

Sorry for your loss mate. As someone who was raised with (not by .....honest ) dogs, it hurts like heck when you have to say goodbye to them.

You did the right thing by your dog when they needed you to be strong for them and do the right thing by them. Be proud of that, thankful for the time you had with them and know that they wouldn't want you to be miserable in their absence.

Feel better soon!

Very sorry to hear of your loss. As others have said and in my own personal experience, having another dog does seem the right thing to do. A home just feels empty without a dog.

So sorry to hear this mate. Lost a border collie at 7 as well to lymphoma. From diagnosis to death was 3 months and right up till the last week apart from a swollen neck she was the same as ever. Last week was awful and I'll never forget it.

Dogs are a true part of a family and it has really put me off getting another of my own as you get too attached.

Time is a healer but never forget the good times you had with him.

Really sorry to hear of your loss mate.My 14 year old Vizsla-Cyrus,died a few months ago.Took him to the vets for some blood to be taken for tests as he wasn't right.Afterwards,I got him out of the car and he walked into the house and got into his bed and died withing 20 minutes with me by his side.
Tests all came back negative,so I think it was just his time and he did it on his terms.
I had him individually cremated by a specialist company.Ive kept some of him and the rest I've scattered at several of his favourite places.
Gutting and I'm gutted for you as I know what it's like...
