I've been playing the guitar for a few years now, and was given a very nice vintage banjo for Christmas. I've fitted a new bridge and restrung it, bought two finger picks and a thumb pick. It makes a lovely sound and there are plenty of bluegrass teaching vids on the internet.

I'd hoped my familiarity with the guitar would help, and it does a bit with the left hand but to be honest I'm struggling to come to terms with the various right hand roll sequences. Anyone else gone this route? How long does it take to become reasonably competent?

I want to learn to play bass guitar, was thinking of self teaching. Can't be that hard?
