Walking boots?
Looking to get some walking boots for the winter. Considering some salomon Quest boots but there seems to be quite a few reviews reporting that they leak so putting me off.
Anyone got any recommendations for some Half decent walking boots that won't leak or fall to bits within a month or two???

As above, hillmasters are a good boot, but depends on what you're doing, I used them on some grade 2/3 scrambles and they didn't seem to give me enough feeling underfoot but for general walking they're good.

All weather hiking, grade 1, 2, 3 scrambles and some climbs.
Had my Merrells for nearly 18 months, still like brand new. The key to goretex, or any boot/shoe for that matter is clean and dry properly after every use and reproof accordingly.

Hhmmm...... It seems from reading reviews for various goretex based boots that several people report they leak. Was looking at the merrells too but they seem to have as many reports of them leaking as the salomons.
I wonder if it's a case people don't look after them or they just don't perform how they should?
Maybe i need to go the leather route. Don't 'look' as nice but I guess the main thing is they keep your feet warm, dry and are comfortable.

I replaced my "old" Brasher boots,
after 3 years. with new HillMaster GTX boots,... Not as good as the old ones,
Leather is thinner... fit not as good, shock absorption, and comfort (after 4 weeks), not as good as the old ones,I think they are now made in china...

Obviously if you fully submerge them they'd probably leak lol
Having said that, a recent wild camp just below Snowdon summit I pitched in the dark next to a small pond, went to get some water from said pond and ended up putting my foot in lol, straight in/out stayed fully dry...

Brasher Hillmasters for me, but as reported by someone above, the newer ones don't seem as good. I ripped my first pair after running over my foot with a pallet truck, but they'd seen me up mountains through rivers and snow for many years. From the moment I put them on they were superb with not a single blister and never leaked. The Merrels they replaced had ripped my heals apart within a mile, and despite trying different socks and lacing techniques I couldn't get them to fit my feet well enough for serious walking. The Brashers were a revelation, but my second pair are not as comfy. Can't comment on any others as I won't be buying any more until they wear out in maybe 10-15 years time.

You need a long boot to get any protection, this was done when I went over wearing leather brashers:

I hiked 1600 metres up this mountain and back down in a pair of deck shoes (didn't have walking boots). A bit uncomfortable on the way back down but I was fine.

However my Berghaus boots were rather more useful when I did the Snowdon horseshoe:
My mate's quite expensive walking boots fell apart part of the way down though!
Just get whatever fits.

Had some Berghaus gore-tex that lasted 5 years,started to split around the soles.Thing with gore-tex/breathable material is to keep it clean etc.if you start leaving it to get covered in dirt/grime it don't do its job so well..
