Unhappy DPF REMOVAL MOT FAILURE FROM FEBRUARY

Its quite common to have the dpf filter removed in diesel cars - usually its not for performance..it was more the fact that a filter costs £1500 from a dealer and they want 7 hours labour to change it..!

But if the shell of the dpf and all wiring is still in place, how can they tell that the dpf innards haven't been removed and the function software deleted?

Not that I'm saying my Fozzy has anything like this done you understand .

thats what i think too..usually the filter is removed box is put back in place..and its deleted from the ecu..so no error..

however there are loads of people who have got a eco tune kit fitted - this removes the filter and there pipe works goes in its place..i think they are in a pickle.. the kits are not cheap close to £1000..

Some people fit a decat type pipe, this will be a failure. If the particulate is cut open it's insides removed & then welded up it won't fail so long as a suitable remap has been carried out to update the ECU. If you are clever you can cut along the original weld or cut a flap out which goes towards the floor & the tester won't have a clue. This is old news to those who carry out remaps & particulate deletes, it's been expected for a while & most cars have been done so a tester can't tell.

My A4 has DPF, EGR and EGR cooler removed completely. Fortunately I have the DPF so will have it gutted and refitted.

MOT is a visual inspection so if it looks like its there then it's fine.

The only concern is smoke emissions. Smoke analysers do have a euro 4 option, so in future the particulate level maybe reduced (currently its the same as for non euro4 engines). Then you may have a issue. Especially if the engine is a bit smokey, which a common cause for Dpf problems anyway. The thing is you don't see the black smoke as its trapped by the filter ( still get blue smoke and grey ash though )

As I have alway maintained if the engine is running right The DPF rarelygives issue - its only when the engine clogs up with soot/oil via the egr, burns oil, or a few sensor or injectors go wonky, whereby the engine becomes more smokey and clogs the Dpf faster, requiring more regens, or preventing active regenrations, which if the driving style is wrong ( preventing passive regeneration) just compounds the matter.

To reiterate if the dpf has to regen frequently it's a sign the engine isn't happy - even when no codes are stored in the ECU!

For example something as simple as a faulty thermostat can cause DPFs to clog. Common on BMWs no fault codes stored (bar the ones saying the DPF is full )

And for those of us with BMW diesels it's worth Googling how to access the hidden menu where you can see the engine temperature. Worth checking that it really does get properly hot (90 degrees C or more) once in a while, see post five here: http://www.babybmw.net/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=13453

Ok, so how will the tester know if a particular car is meant to have a Dpf or not?

My car, Volvo V50, is a euro4 model, but doesn't have a dpf fitted.
A lot of these cars either did, or did not have them fitted from factory, and it doesn't really matter what year the car was manufactured either.

Just get a DPF delete & remap done. You'll get better fuel consumption & performance & will never have to worry about DPF issues again.

Look into that then, was thinking of getting rid the car over next few weeks.Must say the diesel came in handy driving to Czech,1,040 miles and one fuel stop going there.Thought that was good for a 2ltr turbo...

Yep alot of BMW now don't even have temperature guages...and the newer ones that do actually have a oil temperature gauge, not coolant....which is a bit useless if one of the coolant thermostats (there are two) are stuck open.
