I'd consider it if we had consistent snow year on year and lasting more than a week or so. As things stand the costs don't really outweigh the benefits.

Also as the missus is on maternity leave until April I'll take her car if it gets really scary

I put winter tyres (Vredestein Snowtrac 3) on last year and they make a huge difference when it snows, but also when it rains I noticed. It is very hilly where I live and quite rural but I didn't have any problems getting around in a front wheel drive car. I ended up driving round a few people who'd got stuck.

I'd like to try the same tyres on a Fiat Panda 4x4 - I think that would be an unbeatable combination.

This is the point. In low temps and wet roads winter tyres are much better than summer/all season tyres! They are not just for snow and they do make a big difference despite what many on here will tell you (most of whom have never tried them of course).

My 330d is useless/scary/doesn't actually move in snow. Will winter tyres actually make the car useable in snow?

A friend of mine had a set of winter tyres on his 330d manual last year, Didn't have a problem driving it in snow but obviously not with a heavy right foot though

Another vote for winter tyres, I live on a steep hill in england and the mountain region in istra croatia, in the uk last year couple of neighbours one with a discovery and the other with a nissan patrol couldn't go up or down, poxy front wheel drive rover was up, down, in and out anywhere in all weathers both in croatia and uk, only needed to get my isuzu out once in the snow over in croatia and that was to go and get a mate that was stuck a couple of miles from home and the only reason I didn't go in the rover was because in the suzi I could go across country (10 miles less) and when I got there I could pull him out, I actually just towed him home because it was easier than watching him spin everywhere.

FYI; said mate was in a Landrover 110 with part worn road biased tyres, which he gave to me for my transporter and have been fine all summer.

I picked up some cheap BMW alloys (17" on a 330d) off ebay and put some falken 449's on em.

Was fantastic driving last year in the snow (all winter infact). Gave great confidence.

Living in High Wycombe, I'd be struggle without them.

Might look into this for my Impreza this year.

I had some snow tyres on an Evo a few years ago and it was deadly in the wet though. Came over form Japan with them on. Was my girlfriend at the time that noticed it. She was the first one to drive it in the wet and text me at work saying "the Evo goes sideways easily" I was thinking she must be pushing it. Was only after I drove it I realised how bad it was.

Just one point, isn't the idea kinda pointless if you are equipped with winter tyres, when the majority of, lets face it inexperienced winter drivers on our roads, aren't. All it takes is one tit not using appropriate speed at a icy junction and its game over for both parties. A set of winter tyres isn't going to help much if the front end of your car is stoved in. I tend to stay/work at home for this reason and I usually swap to a spare set of winter boots, but only when i absolutely have to travel. It needs to be made mandatory as it is in most of Europe.

Even the budget tyres make a world of difference. I had Nankang sv2,s fitted for £350 the other year and they are more than adequate.
Over here in Germany i have been overtaken by many BMW'S in the snow. They all seem to do fine with winter tires on.

Still not done anything about this but have come to the conclusion that the car will be wearing these wheels for upto 4 months of the year so I want something that looks good.
I think I'm going to buy some Riva DTM 18's with Khumo winter tyres which will sting me for around £850

I was never bothered and always made good progress in the snow be it an Impreza, a Fabia VRS or my Elise - the 3 Series however is downright dangerous in the snow if you actually manage to get it to move - which is unlikely!
These are bring bought out of necessity!

So you guys are not interested in the safety of yourselves or your family then?

Just because some idiot "might" hit you doesn't mean they will. Have you considered that you might be the idiot who gets caught out and is unable to stop rather than the guy behind you, or the guy infront of you who did stop thanks to winter tyres and you hit him because you are to selfish and arrogant to take simple precautions.

I really must remember that every driver in Britain is a superstar driving god and couldn't possibly be responsible for causing an accident. However it is amazing how many accidents there are in Britain in the winter bearing in mind you are all driving gods who can defy the laws of physics.
