Well they're not being sneaky about it as a nationalised company. Just in case anyone missed it they recently put up postal costs by way more than RPI. Although it could be argued that this was part of the fattening up process for privatisation

Hot water is a luxury that people are going to have to realise they aren't entitled to. A warm bath once a week is going to have to do most people, unless they bloody work harder!

Is France still turning off its street lights late at night?
The UK does make me wonder why it feel its necessary to have so many street lights running all night long with 1970's photocell technology (which consume power even when the light is off).
Admittedly some councils are trialling networked "intelligent" photocells but this stuff was around well over ten years ago. Not to forget the all the old familiar "yellow" low pressure sodium lamps have all been replaced by white (ish) high pressure sodium lamps that comsume MORE power per lumen than the lamps they replaced. At a time when energy prices are forever increasing!
Beggers belief!

We're under Harborough District Council in Leicestershire.
Most of our village's street lights go off around midnight and come back on about 6am. We've had this for several years and it seems to work very well. We also have fortnightly wheelie bin collections, with our recycling bins collected on the other weeks, and they're excellent too.

We still have weekly bin collections.
Admittedly, one of two bins is collected one week and the other the next, but its still a weekly collection.
I thank the Tories or that.

Fortnightly with us for (household) general waste. Thought that was pretty much the norm nowadays, seems to be what most people have anyway.

We have replaced most of our stock with a management system that utilises dimming and part night switch off's. This is returning 500k a year savings on energy costs (even after ROI of the management system implementation costs), over the previous installation prior to this recent asset change.
Other authorities have gone for high cost replacement lamps..... the trouble is the ROI on those units is something like 25yrs.
It's not only domestic users that get hit with these immense price increases in energy costs.
Unfortunately even these types of savings pale in to insignificance when authorities like ours are now tasked with a reduction in budgets amounting to £92million over the next four years (it will be £110+ million if a Council Tax increase does not happen)........... that is going to hurt big style on an annual budget of around £400 million.
There's a storm coming!

Does anyone expect the utilities comps to operate at a loss? .Lat year iirc sse returned a profit of 4.5%, yes profits may seem huge at 100's millions but look at the big picture ffs. Remember as well utilities such as wwu are investing billions up rating the old pipes and cables. Without profit this would never happen.

However, you need to realise how this is done and what impact it has on the consumer. Price controls are put in place by OFGEM to ensure you and I don't get one from behind. Average increase to our bills equates to just under a tenner a year. That increase is year on year till 2021.... 2021 average will equate to just under £13 when you take in to account appropriate indexing.

Tony, nobody is asking anybody to thank anyone, just merely pointing out a few facts.
But please tell me, do you think SSE etc should make a profit or not. If not, where do you suggest the money for investment should come from?
