Who's gonna stop 'em?

Dave? HIS mates are making money from them.

OFGAS? Toothless.

And it's NO good economising, they HAVE to make a profit, so will just bang the prices up AGAIN

NOW who thinks it was a good idea to sell off BG?

He was in 'power' a few years ago, signed us up to a EU directive on emissions and now we are getting crucified for it.

And how could he do that? They are privatised industries with a token, but pretty much ineffective, watchdog. They can do what they want!

As alacazar says they should never have been privatised in the first place!

Without a doubt, and they'll be sneaky about how they do it.
Different delivery bands(stretching out 1st and 2nd class), different delivery slots etc.

Well they're not being sneaky about it as a nationalised company. Just in case anyone missed it they recently put up postal costs by way more than RPI. Although it could be argued that this was part of the fattening up process for privatisation

Hot water is a luxury that people are going to have to realise they aren't entitled to. A warm bath once a week is going to have to do most people, unless they bloody work harder!

The chart on that... ahem... website takes no account of income levels in all these countries. For instance energy is effectively cheaper in France or Germany than here as they have higher average incomes than here!

Is France still turning off its street lights late at night?

The UK does make me wonder why it feel its necessary to have so many street lights running all night long with 1970's photocell technology (which consume power even when the light is off).

Admittedly some councils are trialling networked "intelligent" photocells but this stuff was around well over ten years ago. Not to forget the all the old familiar "yellow" low pressure sodium lamps have all been replaced by white (ish) high pressure sodium lamps that comsume MORE power per lumen than the lamps they replaced. At a time when energy prices are forever increasing!

Beggers belief!

We're under Harborough District Council in Leicestershire.

Most of our village's street lights go off around midnight and come back on about 6am. We've had this for several years and it seems to work very well. We also have fortnightly wheelie bin collections, with our recycling bins collected on the other weeks, and they're excellent too.

We still have weekly bin collections.

Admittedly, one of two bins is collected one week and the other the next, but its still a weekly collection.

I thank the Tories or that.

Fortnightly with us for (household) general waste. Thought that was pretty much the norm nowadays, seems to be what most people have anyway.

That's not strictly the reality in all cases.

We have replaced most of our stock with a management system that utilises dimming and part night switch off's. This is returning 500k a year savings on energy costs (even after ROI of the management system implementation costs), over the previous installation prior to this recent asset change.

Other authorities have gone for high cost replacement lamps..... the trouble is the ROI on those units is something like 25yrs.

It's not only domestic users that get hit with these immense price increases in energy costs.

Unfortunately even these types of savings pale in to insignificance when authorities like ours are now tasked with a reduction in budgets amounting to £92million over the next four years (it will be £110+ million if a Council Tax increase does not happen)........... that is going to hurt big style on an annual budget of around £400 million.

There's a storm coming!

Does anyone expect the utilities comps to operate at a loss? .Lat year iirc sse returned a profit of 4.5%, yes profits may seem huge at 100's millions but look at the big picture ffs. Remember as well utilities such as wwu are investing billions up rating the old pipes and cables. Without profit this would never happen.

Yeah try £30 billion investment.

However, you need to realise how this is done and what impact it has on the consumer. Price controls are put in place by OFGEM to ensure you and I don't get one from behind. Average increase to our bills equates to just under a tenner a year. That increase is year on year till 2021.... 2021 average will equate to just under £13 when you take in to account appropriate indexing.

Idiot

No, the street lights here in France now stay on, there are almost as many as in the UK, but not on major roads, just in towns.
Most are LP Sodium.

We even have ONE where I live........

We're supposed to thank a corporation for spending money on infrastructure that enables it to do business now are we? Should we thank Tesco for spending money on shops that enables it to profit? This just highlights the pseudo-market that is power generation and retail.

Tony, nobody is asking anybody to thank anyone, just merely pointing out a few facts.

But please tell me, do you think SSE etc should make a profit or not. If not, where do you suggest the money for investment should come from?
