Let's say it all kicks off and all the super powers, and Britan get involved in a huge conflict. Can they make you go to war?

What if everyone in the UK said they were not going to join the army.

BLAH BLAH BLAH

All a bit scary. TBH wars aren't about manpower any more, they are about firepower.

I'm not aware that conscription is still valid in the UK, didn't it stop in the 60's ?
Too old for it anyway, though my IT and telecommunications skills would possibly make me desirable.
How would you get conscripted ? Based on passport or on electoral role ?

The conflict is within one country, and more a tribal war at that.

A genuine WW3 would be over in a matter of hours.

Lots of red buttons out there.

Classic Mattee....

He is right, man power wouldnt be needed - but that wasnt really the question and to be fair, the UK has been so good at what we have done because we are an island and make life easier to defend ourselves as opposed to other nations. Personally I dont think we'd have anything to worry about for a minimum for 50 years - the countries that are screwed up enough to try any serious conflict are so far behind the rest of the Western World anyway.

Man power not needed anymore , look at the destruction that was made when we went to war with iraq before we put men on the ground

It's not the dumps like Syria that I'm bothered about fighting, it's their allies. Russia and China are opposed to strikes there, and trouble with either of those could be catastrophic, especially China. I'm no expert in politics and military escalation, but our history has taught us that minor troubles in unimportant places can lead to major conflict, especially if those troubles have been planned and staged covertly for the primary reason to create the problem. Black ops units from the US, China, Russia, Israel or anywhere could easily have carried out the recent chemical attack to create a political situation to facilitate further action. Whether it's oil or indirect action to deliberately involve a third party for other means, I wouldn't put it past any government to be more guilty than Asadd.

I tried to join the TA once and they didn't even acknowledge my application, so if the do call me up they can get stuffed. I was not good enough for them then and ten years of drinking and smoking later I'm pretty sure I would be very low on the list.

Same training as the TA but with officer content. And passed a POC and AIB. All low level stuff but more than most. I was a damn good shot at the APWTs too. Add high fitness levels too.

So not exactly SAS but still better equipped than your average fatboy Walter who has read a few Andy McNab books.

I know SN loves to take the mick but if it went horribly wrong, I'd be better equipped than most to deal with it.

So ner you fat geeks

Well, if WW3 does break out, it's going to get very hot very quickly. Think 2 or 3 big Nuclear Bombs from Russia would wipe out all of Great Britain.

I just need enough warning to make Cheryl Cole mine for 20 minutes.

You action man types will be squealing like little babies if the **** did hit the fan, Mr Ordinary will pull you out of the ****, pat you on the head, wipe your snotty little nose and then get down to real business..

If we were all not prepared to defend our own country from attack then we would deserve to be subjugated by another country which just walked in and took us over.

If it had not been for the British spirit and the outstanding leadership of Sir Winston we would be living under the jackboot right now and I can assure you that you would not like that very much!
