Ideally I need a large boot for 2 dogs and assume they have a similar size?

Seeing as the second link doesn't work, you'd be better off with the first.
If the two dogs you refer to are the beagles you always post photos of, you could fit the pair of them in the boot of a Daewoo Matiz.
You can fit two Newfoundlands, a Great Dane and a cat in to the back of a Freelander, with enough room for them to curl up, I've seen it done.

I didn't think the boot space on a grand cherokee was particularly large compared to the size of the car. I've not put dogs in one, just saddles and horse tack, but I would imagine there were more spacious vehicles.

BMW Mini Cooper Clubman D has stacks of space in the back with the rear seats flat with handy rear doors and it does 45-50 mpg on short runs, Performance is respectable for a 1600 too.
