I find that shocking. Why should the care you get in hospital be any less on a weekend? It should be the same staff on be it a Wednesday or a Saturday, just do shifts like they do in any other job that needs full 24hr cover.

An anaesthetist friend of mine pointed this out to me in the late 1980s. He worked in Bristol for a year on an exchange (with a colleague who never returned to this country).
Basically, he said the more qualified you are, the more likely you will be working sociable hours.
Being acutely ill on a late Sunday is more likely to result in your needs being met by someone less trained/skilled.
Being an anaesthetist, he got to see various surgeons at work and said some of them were so useless, he frequently felt tempted to take over.
However I am sure it is not like this any more on the NHS
