Default Nitro RC Cars

Any one on here have a Nitro RC car?

Im toying with the idea of buying a second hand one & would like some recommendations.

At the moment I have seen a HPI Savage & a Hyper 7 but they are still quite expensive,

Hyper 7 gets my vote every time!

I just prefer the stability of a buggy as I soon get bored picking up an upturned truck every 5mins lol.

Had several of the 7's and worth every penny. If you can get a 2nd hand one with a few mods done, even better.

Spares are readily available cheaply from Ebay. The only mods I would recommend doing out of the box are replacing the standard battery box, it uses AA's as standard, so go for a rechargeable hump pack, it will save you hassle and money.

Oh, and the steering servo is a bit weak, upgrade it to a metal geared one with decent torque and your good to go!

This is one of our vids...

Its a nightmare , got one off a mate that said all I needed was a pull string , fuel , and glo plugs. Got it up and running for 5mins of every 30 trying to get it started. Then after this ritual a few weekends in a row I finnaly seemed to get it dialled in and ran it for 10 mins of joy. . . . .then the engine seized

Totally gave up fiddling about for all the run time I got. If you have time , patience and decent gear it might be fine . If I was doing it again (I keep an eye on Ebay) I will go electric for sure.

Here it is (was)

I could be tempted to sell my savage x 4.6 as I don't have time to use it

I don't want to knock nitro cars as it is all personal preference but I used to have a nitro car years and years ago and had a fair bit of trouble with it. Also, in order for it to be more fun, I wanted to find a club and no where in Gloucester/Cheltenham had a decent club. Nitro RC clubs are a lot less common than electric car clubs I found.

I sold it and bought an electric car for tarmac and/or carpet racing. Found a club and it was great fun racing around a track against 6-10 other cars, plus we were grouped so you were always racing against people your level.

the traxxas jato's are very good and fast, but the best bit is the built in starter motor. just pop the starter in the top of the chassis, push the button and it heats the glow plug and spins the engine until it starts. all you have to do is put your finger over the exhaust so it pressurises the fuel tank to push the fuel into the carb during the starting procedure. the pull starts can be a nightmare as the cords are so short!!!

You can't beat the sound of a nitro on full chat and no problem with batteries going flat but I hear what you're saying about them being fiddly to get tuned right but if you take time to understand the fine tuning you won't have any issues.

I used to run mine every weekend without a hiccup

i had the hyper 7 black edtion and found it very reliable, but as above has said the pull starter is a nightmare so i took mine off and got a starter box which i found so much better.

Would like to put a bigger engine in it as it seems a bit slow lol and 3 speed box. But must admit there are so much fun. Especially on a park with hills. One hill is 12 ft drop. To buy a rc i always favour the 4x4 there you can take them any where

There's always a "Truggy", somewhere in between a buggy and a truck.

Something like the Hyper ST

Been watching a few vids on Youtube & the savage seems a little unsturdy on corners,. But a buggy doesn't have the same sort of ground clearance

Trucks are always going to be a little top heavy. Buggies are all out racers, stiff suspension and little ground clearance.

Something like this is in between...

you will never look back.

Yeh, there's the ST or the ST Pro which has a few mods already on it.

A bit more money though

I have decided that as my first car I don't want anything too expensive & I got advertised not to buy second hand,

Spoke to a model shop in Bolton that a friend recommended & they can do me a complete Nitro car with Control brand new for £150 its a 1/10 s model, 4 WD Nitro Buggy, Comes with 4 free tune ups & health checks.

They sell a few of them & said that they have plenty of parts in the shop should I manage to destroy it.

If I get into it & enjoy it then they will take that back in PX for a better one

Traxxas Revo Quite expensive but it's good stuff. Better build quality than stuff like HPi in my opinion. Also seem much more reliable after experience with a mixture of makes and models when a group of us were really in to it.

You can get some good deals on second hand stuff.
