Anyone know what's the difference between server ram and pc ram

Server RAM will have error checking chip on it. Runs slower than PC ram but much more reliable - in terms of data handling i.e errors.

As a home PC does not need to worry about this then they dont have the error correction chip. Some will also have different buffer types etc as servers run many more times the RAM capacity of a normal PC.

Server RAM = ECC/Parity checking, branded specifically for a Motherboard, more expensive.

PC RAM = Generic non-partiy Memory for any motherboard.


The ECC (Error Checking and Correction) is used in Server RAM as a Server is classed as a high priority system which is needed to help prevent Failures. You tend to find Server Manufaturers such as DELL, IBM etc.. will get branded Memory with specifics such as these and also in some instances using a different Voltage to those found in normal PC Motherboards.

On the subject of PC RAM. Prices are now rising on RAM prices as many companies who produce it are switching fabrication to Mobile Device RAM. Expect DDR3 prices to rise from now on
