It depends on what the position is you are applying for I think, If your applying for some kind of office or management job then a suit would be the way forward. If your applying for a workers job smart casual is the way forward.

Google comes up with:
What is business casual dress?
Everyone
Clean, pressed clothes in good condition
Men
Jacket or blazer
Open necked shirts (with collar) or polo shirts
Cords, moleskin, twill, chinos, woollen, linen or cotton trousers
Belts (trousers with belt loops)
Socks and shoes
What is not business casual?
Everyone
Fleeces (indoors)
Jeans
Anything see through
Sportswear/gym wear, e.g., leggings, trainers, vest tops
T-shirts with slogans
Shorts

If its a modern style company I reckon you can get away with things like smart jeans and a shirt etc. Someone like Google would want this style of employee rather than a office drone. Modern world is a lot more relaxed about stuff like this.
Id possibly just play safe with a decent pair of trousers and a shirt with top button undone, no tie etc. Imagine you were going on a date to a casual venue not a swanky restaurant

Can't be, he said "market leading".
@Ant, Seriously, even if the company says, smart casual, I would still wear a suit and look smart, first impressions is everything. If in doubt, wear suit, worry about fashion afterwards if you get the job. Good luck by the way.

Wear a suit to the interview, you only get one chance at a first impression, you can then wear your slobbing gear once you have the job. For my interview at HP in Germany I wore a suit and everyone else was wearing shorts, t-shirt and flip flops. Once I got the job I then dressed accordingly. What does it matter if you look a **** in your interview atleast it shows you made an effort.
