Eactly, scrap the licence fee and make the company actually try to make a profit and then see if they strike.

I suppose going on strike whilst working for a firm that can't go broke certainly makes more sense than going on strike for one that can.
Just ask any civil servant with a fat pension pot.

We should alll subscribe to SKY at £50 a month. That'll show them where to stick the £145.50 a year !!

If you subscribe to SKY, you still have to pay the licence fee AFAIK.
Are other stations available as well as SKY and BBC? Perhaps you might be happy to watch them?
One could then watch the BBC on a "pay per view" or some other subscription basis. I am certain that would be a great business plan for the BBC and it would have the added advantage of being fairer.
The BBC fee is about as fair as the Poll Tax IMO.

$ky is joke. Les did you know how much it costs for a new customer: http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2013/03/0...now-tv-stream/

And they STILL hurl adverts at you! Ergo, you pay to watch adverts!?

Now I don't mind paying TV subscriptions...if prevents the BBC turning into the likes of ITV which is probably the most pathetic excuse for mainstream Television (they can't even broadcast in Dolby on terrestrial or cable , not that the content warrants it ) ...

But in respects of subscription TV, if I pay for something, I: a) don't want adverts, even if it doesn't interrupt footage and b) I don't want the payments used to fund something else....i.e like how Sky F1 subscriptions are used to subsidies Football.

That said...the BBC should have been encrypted at the point of digital switch-over and made into a subscription service. Pretty much every TV and set-top box has a PCIMIA slot to accept a CAM (condition access module...aka "top up TV" ). Then those that don't pay don't watch. It would also disband the farcical TVL and their bully-boy letters should one ever dare to have a TV tuner delivered to a non-licensed address

I made the mistake of having a £15 USB TV tuner delivered to my work address...had threats ever since. Its soley because of the TV Licensing authority I want the BBC encrypted, in order to put an end to this bunch of Hitlers

They should offer an opt out.

Why should we have to pay? Why not get the option?

If it was encrypted, then people could opt out.

You can opt out, if you don't watch broadcast television.

But don't you need a tv licence for a laptop now too.

Providing you only watch On-demand video, and not live streamed content

As mentioned a license is only required for LIVE/on-air broadcasts.

The people at the TV licensing were at one point very coy about, this implying you needed a license if you had a PC or smartphone witha internet connection. If they had the chance they'd probably want you to buy a TV license so you could scratch your **** near a TV!

They've since changed the wording on their website and bullying letters, presumably after enough people complained about how misleading they were being.

When my house was empty in the run up to selling it, I endured these letters. I usually just binned them, but my GF at the time tried phoning them to get them to stop, and they basically said that if there was any TV or recording equipment in the house I could be held liable.

My attitude was; I'd like to see them try.

But just to be sure I re-read the law to the letter, and low and behold it was bull crap. The law sates there has to be intent to watch a live broadcast. Its vague on how it defines this intent, but basically ensuring a receiver or device cannot play a live broadcast is enough to show there is no intent. For a TV, that means no aerial or cable to the aerial.

And thats what I did...pulled the power off the aerial booster in the attic and removed all the aerial leads off the TVs (which ended up being sold anyway). Then the next time I had a "pay up or we'll send a inspector round" letter, I binned it and said "bring it on"!
