They all have a silent "L", as in "ahmund", "pahm" and "hahves"...
Unless, of course, you are American, and then, for some reason, you suddenly start pronouncing almond as al-mond

Illiterate lot, the Yanks....

[Leslie mode on] We shouldn't slag Americans off. They're entitled to call an almond al-mond if they like. Just because British don't believe in the L within an al-mond, why should Americans believe the same. We all have a right to live with our own beliefs.[/off]

Only messing, Les.

Anyway, on this 'silent' business, why bother with a letter in a word, if you aren't gonna speak it? I don't get it.

I think silent letters were pronounced well and clear in olden times. I reckon people started to act too smart when they started to chew letters to look clever in front of others by coming across as un-understandable and puzzling. That must have kicked off this 'silent' business. Either this, or just pure and simple lazy attitude toward language when you skip a letter because you can't be @rsed speaking it.

Yeah, but 'why' is something to think about.

I`ve noticed recently some Americans pronouncing the "L" in "calm", almost like "colm". Having said that I say the "L" in almond.

I thought it was English who talk like they have a golf ball in their mouth, not Americans? I'm talking about colm for calm- L business aside.

English would say Project, whereas Americans would say Praject. English would say antibiotics. Americans would say antibiatics. English would say awesome. American will say Aaasome.

I thought it was Irish peeps who speal calm like colm, although they don't deliberately go ahead pronouncing the silent L for sod all, no way.

It's a minefield.
