My commute is about to get a lot longer so I'm thinking of buying a £3-5000 runabout on the company. I'd only use it from driving to and from work, so could I run it all through the company?

(I'm a contractor with an 'outside IR35' contract)

BTW, any suggestions on the car? Has to be auto, quiet, quick enough, and smooth

You will get stiffed for company car tax, as it will be parked at your house and you could not guarantee it would only be used for business purposes. The only way you could swing it is if you had offices somewhere where it was left overnight (pref. in a lcoked compound) and you used your own car to get to and from those offices. Then it would be a 'pool car'.

Probably better off buying it yourself and then paying yourself mileage expenses (tax-free ) at the Agreed Mileage rate (40p for first 10k, 25p thereafter).

Isn't the onus on the IR to prove that I'm using it for personal use?

I thought the IR did **** all work, thats why we have to do our own tax forms etc etc, so I would guess they will say its used for personal use !! they dont have to prove anything

could be wrong, it has been known

Bizarrely, no. The onus is on you to prove it isn't for personal use (otherwise nobody would pay company car tax).
