it's not for me it's for someone I know who's suffering from a few illnesses.

nice that's good 8ph.

doctors keep recommending more drugs and steroids as you know there is no cure for nothing,

no money in the cure, loads of money in the drugs.

TBH, anywhere with harder than average water will be slightly alkaline.

Try some of the so-called mineral waters, most give their pH on the bottle.

To the OP, what makes you think firstly that (more) alkaline water will make one jot of difference to your acquaintance's condition, and second, that the water where they live isn't already relatively alkaline?

As others have already pointed out, this whole subject is notorious for charlatans on the make and general quackery. Not only that, because the overwhelming majority of people in this country are served with water which is at least moderately hard by their utility companies, and because the latter deliberately add alkaline chemicals (in safe amounts) to minimize the build-up of calcium deposits caused by hard water, odds are that your friend or relative is already consuming water with a pH higher than neutral. If you really want to do them a favour, stop filling their head with this alkaline water crap, or if it wasn't you who first put them onto it, try to make them see it for the rubbish that it is

Oh I see - I am guessing it won't be very alkaline once it is in the stomach then.

I had trouble with acid resurgence which was very painful, like very intense heartburn.

I was prescribed Omeprazole which stops the stomach from overproducing stomach acid.

It is very easy to take, in those plastic bomb pills which are easy to swallow. No taste or unpleasant side effects. It gives almost instant relief and if you have that problem it might be worth asking your doctor about it. I just need one pill a day to keep the problem completely suppressed.

Can you run me through the chemistry here?

It's really quite simple. Calcium carbonate is the chief culprit in what makes water hard, and if the water's pH ever dropped too far below neutral it would react and break down into more problematic compounds. Better to have a bit of inert chalk furring up your kettle than a bunch of complex calcium and other salts which might actually react with your plumbing or appliances, or even your own biology.

Hold on, you said to minimise the build up of calcium deposits, now you're saying preventing them breaking down. That's sort of completely different, unless i'm missing something

Fair point, I should have said specifically non-carbonate deposits, and in truth the soluble salts you'd get from acid breakdown of generic lime-scale may well be less prone to build-up, although that depends on the surface they come into contact with.

Changes nothing so far as the OP's query goes though - where you've got water that furs up the kettle, you've got above neutral pH, and in practice that'll be 80% or so of the water-supply in most developed countries.
