Either is fine, but it doesn't really matter these days and here's why?

The practice arose when using typewriters and old printing plate technology as it made a good visual break for sentences. However with the rise of computers the practice didn't really work.

The reason is that old printing technology and typewriters by definition used monospaced fonts e.g. each letter takes uo the same amount of space e.g. an i was as long as an m so when two spaces were left at the end of a sentence the gap was significant.

With computers most fonts are proportional i.e. an i takes up less space than an m and hence the two space gap wasn't that different to a one space gap so it fell out of favour.

Then came the internet where two spaces in HTML is always rendered as one space unless the   tag is used.

So use either.... both are fine

I use two spaces as this is what I was taught at school and it has stuck.

I'm sure the reason is the original typewriters as is the layout of the qwerty keyboard.

I take it you're American as you've called it a period, but I use two spaces after a full stop (English term for a period).

Has anyone mentioned the "en" and the "em" space yet? Is it even relevant?

Can't see how it's relevant to you John? I thought all you Doctor types stick to handwritten illegible nonsense

Bloody hell, not heard "en" and "em" spacing since I cut my teeth in desktop publishing with GEM's Ventura Publisher about a million years ago,

To the OP. Double spaces are not required following a full stop; I refer the OP and others to http://www.slate.com/articles/techno..._invaders.html

Unless you're using a typewriter, don't do it.
