Default Clever cameron

'Just briefly on Europe since I discussed the issue last time. It’s quite clear that the referendum offer is a piece of tactical party management and a vote-catcher for 2015, since it’s dependent on a new Treaty being on offer in 2017. Anyone who knows the European process (as Cameron certainly does) knows that this isn’t going to happen. The process to get 27 countries to agree takes more than 4 years and it hasn’t started yet. So if 2017 comes round and we have a Conservative government, I assume they’ll simply say that sadly no choice is available yet, but hay, re-elect us in 2020 and you can have a referendum next time. The Treaty position in 2017 isn’t going to be materially different from now, so if he really wanted to risk a referendum (as opposed to winning some votes and placating his critics) he could have it now, instead of introducing 4 years of uncertainty.'

hinteresting, promising somethign that isn't going to actualy be a possibility. doubt alot of folks will know that so very clever indeed

He really is not that clever. That was all realised the moment he mentioned it. No one trusts him after the last load of promises in order to get elected which were conveniently forgotten afterwards!

Might as well have......

Hopefully he'll have finished the "pie in the sky" Lib Dems. I can't wait to see Clegg get his "Portillo moment".

The husband of a friend of mine was one of Clegg's back room team, a long time Lib Dem and someone who himself stood at the last election as a potential MP for them. Since the coalition formed he has resigned from the party and describes Clegg as a power grabbing traitorous ****! If that's what some of his core party activists think of him.... well Portillo moment indeed Can't wait

Hardly of course but he nevertheless managed to achieve his present position and his promises, later abandoned for his convenience, aided his chances without doubt.

Do you feel he can be trusted Martin?

If you are saying no he didn't win the election, and therefore the Conservative manifesto was irrelevant (as was the Lib Dem's), then I agree.

His party did at least do better than the others, but that does not make him any more trustworthy.
