sky+HD box volume help?
We just one fitted the other day, now find tv volume needs set at least double what it was before in order to be heard...anyone experienced this?
Before we just had standard box.
Checked all tv and sky box volume settings, they seem fine.

now you've said that I've realised mine does the same.
Mines not on hdmi either though, it's on a scart.
I swapped my HD and +HD boxes round the other week but I'm sure the tv has to be turned up with the standard HD too.
(before this we had a very old sky box with a freesat card do it was neither a +/HD/+HD and the tv volume was half what it now is).
It's not really a problem though, is it?

^^^^ You can't get HD through a scart, though the picture will be upgraded from the standard picture on the HD channels to SD converted through the scart. You will find it much better if you purchase a HDMI cable.
I wouldn't say the volume is an issue. As above, my HD channels are quieter and that's with HDMI.

I've been through the tv and sky box volume setups but nothing's really made a difference.
It's not a major problem, just one those things I wondered if there was something wrong for this to be happening.

Try swapping the HDMI lead around Ellie
Looked into this a bit more, looks like this is normal on the new boxes. Its apparently to do with the range of Dolby Digital sound from the box, also that sky have fixed the volume and you can't increase it in the sky sound options menu.

Yes dolby 5.1 and dolby 2.1 audio can appear to be quieter than standard 2 channel PCM. This will be very noticable when switching to channels transmitting audio between those formats. Technically Dolby has less audio compression, bit like the way volume appears to differ between commercial radio vs Radio 2/classic FM, its actually due to the audio compression...where quiet noises are made louder. Dolby usually ensures the quiet sounds stay quiet, so the impression to the listener is the overall volume is quieter.
It certainly is on our AV amp....IF the auto volume levelling is turned off.
But the auto volume levelling is always switched on so its no issue, also stops the jump in volume in adverts, as adverts are usually PCM and hence appear to be louder.
So thats one way of curing it...buy a decent AV amp.
