New person earning more that me sales related
Should I be annoyed I found out today that someone we took on a year ago is being paid 5k more basic from myself. He currently brings in half the sales I do and has never beaten me since he has been here. I have also been with the company for 6 years.
My commission does take my salary past his basic but I am not sure what perks he gets he is on a different bonus scheme to me profit related.
What do you think?

Probably negotiated a better basic than you at interview? or sold himself better, who knows. Ask your boss, call his bluff, threaten to leave, then you'll see how important you really are

Though if he/she is on the exact same level as you and doing the exact same same job as you with the same targets etc, then there is an argument to be legally had for equality & your bosses need or should be aware of it.
There is no legal argument unless there is discrimination.......if they negotiated a better deal then they win.
Even works in the public sector....
I go to Newcastle to work for the NHS and the agreement is that I get up at some ungodly hour to get there at 8.30 and leave when I have finished at 6 ish running full all day NHS clinics....it's a swap.
My swap colleage has negotiated to travel in NHS time so arrives here in Carlisle 10.am and leaves at 3.30 with the proviso that he can have the afternoon free for admin or private patients..
It's how the world of work works.....

Way of the world I'm afraid
You often find newcomers can negotiate a higher salery then people who have been there for a long time
It's a sales managers job To get the best staff available and not always necessary to reward long serving members as they are normally happy in their role otherwise they would leave for a competitor
Forget about him and concentrate on your own job
And as some one pointed out it could be bull s##t Info just to wind you up

We are only a small company and i do get treated well I drive a better car than him and just thought I was on more as I bring in a third of the turnover.
A friend does the wage slips in the office and told me how much he was on.
I think the only thing I can really do so no body gets in trouble, is to wait for our year end and see what my results are and ask for more money

According to the legal team (on the side of course) a case for discrimination is extremely difficult to win, unless the less paid is a woman.
stop worrying about it, most companies do it because they can, and don't forget most of them are sponsered by childrens tax credit, i told my boss straight if i didn't get the tax credit there is no way on this earth i would work, for what i get paid
£72.00 a month better off working by the way
I guess it depends on the structure of commission and bonuses.
For example, suppose the average sales employee at the firm is expected to have OTE of £50,0000 and he was assured the first £20k but you were only assured £15k... would you/should you care?
If you are making your £60k as the top salesman and he is making £40k then there isn't a problem as I see it. Why would you care about the size of the safety net when you can/are easily exceeding it each month.

Also I'd be careful how you put that to your boss. If my payroll clerk started dishing out wage information causing me grief, he'd be the first person gone.
There is nothing that causes more upset than the talk of salaries at work.
