Default Heritage Train Class 47 Catches Fire

A Carnforth bound heritage train was derailed today in Salford causing major road and rail disruption.
2 locos, one at the front and one at the back of a 5 coach train, were involved. The front Class 47 derailed and cought fire.

The story on National Preservation is punctured fuel tank combined with 5 decades of built up grease & crud on the bogie. General concensus is it will be towed to Carnforth for parts recovery then one way trip to Booths

I am a closet railway enthusiast, but only steam.... I just can't summon up any interest whatsoever in diesels or diesel electrics... I saw that yesterday and while it's sad it would be ten times worse if it was a steam locomotive in my opinion.

Another for Booths cutting torches!!
i used to live not far from Booths and knew the guy in charge of the guys with cutting equipment
The ammount of tractors, goils, duffs and eggtimers etc that were disposed of in hrs was frightning!!
Made many a saturday morning there to see a 47 or 37 reduced to a bin of ferous/non ferrous scrap

I beg to differ. Locomotives from that era of railway development represent the last bastion of our magnificent engineering heritage, before successive decades of political interference left nothing but devastation, and call centres

Companies like Brush, English Electric, BRC&W and others, managed to develop and build, from a knowledge base of almost nothing, powerful, solid, & reliable locomotives that were still the backbone of the UKs railway system over 5 decades after they were first introduced

Whilst I understand why they will never find a place in your affections, they (and their designers and builders) are fully deserving of your respect

so,
a 37 = tractor ??
a 50 = hoover ??

so, what are the others, please (for us closet lightweights).

PS - nothing wrong with either steam or diesel.

I'm of an age to (just) remember double headed-hoovers thundering over Shap to Carlisle

I still mourn the days of 87s and Mk3s, on the WCML, the Pendolinos aren't a patch on them for ride or comfort

MrsD and I went to Carlisle a couple of years ago behind 6233 (in her black year) in one of Smithy's Mk1 pullmans, talk about travelling in style

Latest news on National Preservation is that Network Rail, whilst not admitting liability, have installed a check rail on the offending curve, and put up a notice acknowledging that the tyres on 47500 had just been freshly turned to NR specifications

That is just unbelievable.
They must be turning an awful lot of metal from the wheels.
A prime example of minimum spec for wheels meets maximum spec for gauge of track.
