What's happening to the French economy?
Hollande was going to spend his way out of recession.
Anyone know how he's getting on, apart from p*ssing off the likes of Depardieu?
Looking on an SNCF website, their railways are still expanding, new lines being built, others out to tender, others at the discovery stage.
meanwhile, about 10% of their rail network is undergoing renewal.
How are they paying for all that lot? They ALREADY have a way better system than we do......

it looks like the IMF are downgrading the French economy
but i would not bet too heavily against the French, they are pretty tough, proud and nationalistic
can't believe they would want to see themselves as an economic basket case like the spanish or the greeks

The French economy is a mystery to me, I am not an expert but they play Keynesian economics with an economy run along socialist lines and not the large private sector for which it was designed........
Surely it has to fall apart..

You will when all the UK banks go bust because of all the French debt they hold, and the UK gets dragged in to another recession.
French economy has been inching forwards to bankruptcy for decades, it's more a case of when rather than if they become the next Spain.

Isn't London the 6th largest French city by French nationals count? A high tax regime in this world is suicide.

Weekend apathy prevents me posting a proper reply. France is massively dependent on Germany, itself under enormous strain from keeping the Euro dream alive. Things need to turn around quickly before the tremor turns into a collapse. Anybody who thinks the fortunes of the French economy won't affect the UK is just being pig ignorant. Buy a decent newspaper tomorrow, even if it's the only occasion in your life when you do.

If our economy was actually OK, we would now be pulling away from the ailing Euro. We aren't. We haven't. We don't.
In fact the £ is sitting at one of it's lows right now against the Euro which is supposedly being kept from going down the pan by the Germans.
What does THAT say about the £ ???

Nothing, because the reason of the Euros strength is massive intervention by the ECB. The Euro economy is going to deeper do do in order to prop up a political experiment. Not something you want to be part of. Lets see where we are in another 18 months....

If you keep borrowing money in order to buy votes, eventually the interest repayments become so great that you cant keep up with them.
Can anyone explain why successive governments have been too self serving and stupid to realise this?

Of course our economy isn't in great shape. We are able to try and sort it out through the likes of QE and interest rates and aren't constrained by a one size fits all policy directed from unelected officials in Europe. There's going to have to be a change in policy to address the problem oh high debt and low growth, the current path obviously isn't working. We're in danger of following the path of the Japanese economy over the last decade, but without the population time bomb. Looking at immigration figures, lots of people are staking their future in the UK in preference to other EU countries, usually a good economic sign. I doubt the likes of Greece aren't enjoying similar numbers in immigration, especially from other EU countries.

Hocking France for the future generations to have to deal with the mess.

Well as a French resident I can safely say that I try and stay as far away from politics as possible - especially as I don't have the right to vote.
Yes, the economy is not very good over here but as you've mentioned it's kinda ****e throughout most of Europe at least since the last 2 years.
I stay because even in a economic crises I'd much rather be in France enjoying the sunshine, open and empty roads (that are not full of potholes), I pay no road tax and insurance is peanuts and I have plenty of time to enjoy my life rather than working to try and keep up with the Jones' .... so yes "who gives a **** and let them sink" are excellent statements but when the UK hits the pan (as it will if the French economy amongst others really dies), I'll still be off jetskiing in the sun whilst you're all getting rained on and moaning about how everything costs too much. I got out over 10 years ago and it was the best decision I've ever made and there's no way on earth I'd move back to the UK. Every trip back I cringe as the UK just gets worse and worse, difficult to see when you're there permanently but trust me it's a fact.
P.S. If anyone is serious about leaving the UK rat race and is looking for a quality home in the Loire valley then I may be able to help - but don't tell everyone as I don't want my little piece of paradise changing too much

Who will be wiping your **** in 40 years time? I'd rather see the country full with people with the brains and gumption to travel thousands of miles for a living than some doley 3rd generation uk national shell suited moron who was expelled from school who can't find a £50,000 year job a mile away from his government funded house.
And before all the immigrants are on benefits argument, I'd dramatically slash all benefits for everyone in this country. You'd still see massive immigration to this country. It would also buck the ideas up of some sponging morons who live here.

I know LOADS of people out of work in this town. Their age ranges from 18 to 60, although the great majority are under 25. NOT ONE wouldn't rather work.
But they can't, because the immigrants have the jobs....they are employed at less than the going rate and classed as self-employed.
Meanwhile, the employers state what great workers they arer. for great, read "cheap".
The first lot of Polish "welders" that came over here worked for £5 an hour. The company employing them sacked 6 trainees to pay for the polish guys because it saved some money.
THAT company owner has a six-car garage at his £5 million property...with SIX expensive cars in it. So he REALLY needed those few extra £££'s. Unlike the trainees, four of which never finished their training because there were no more jobs. And they couldn't afford to move away to find jobs. THEY are now on the dole, untrained.
Meanwhile, the company soon found out that the "welders" weren't as highly trained as they'd said......
Perhaps before you go off on another rant about lazy, scrounging Brits, you MIGHT like to go out and MEET a few?
