Angry Calling in sick

I'm not one of these that gets a tickle and calls in sick. I can't think of anything worse then to watch day time TV as aposed to working.
So I call my boss this morning to say I'm proper sick, dizzy, sweaty etc - If my voice didn't give it away.

He then goes off on one about it's not a good start to the year and if I am that ill I would have gone to the doctors...

I replied saying I have been to the docs and the doc said to rest with liquids n pills. - He didn't sound convinced. * I get where he is coming from if we are not out fixing the company doesn't get paid but I'm sure there are others that phone in sick so they don't miss big bang or something.

When I first started with the company a mate said he is quite **** about people phoning in sick but as I only had 4 days off last week with a cut hand he seemed fine.

I am border line thinking about going in tomorrow just to save the hassle but at the same time I want to grow some ***** and say "I'm sick I'll happily get the doctor to sign me off for another week but I'm allowed to self certify for 5 days but II hope to be back sooner"

I've only had one day off btw.

Anyone else here have hassle calling in sick?

Go in , cough and sneeze all over the place and see how the boss feels in a day or two ! At the end of the day , if you are too sick to do a proper days work they are loosing money , if u arent there they just wont make any.

Grow a pair and be quick about it,if you're that sick that going to work would be of no benefit to either yourself or the company, then stay home.If you're not the sort who throws a regular sick day, then what's the damn problem.....

I'd be speaking to my union if my boss spoke to me like that!

Two weeks every 6 months off sick, then you don't flag up on the system.

No no, my silk pjs are delicate.....
I was washing a pint glass and it snapped as I twisted the sponge. Went through and needed stitches.

I knew of the 2 week allowance but thought it was yearly..

I worked in a bar. I called in sick the day before my shift. It was the only day in the year i called in ill.

I later found out that the boss had asked if i'd been in the pub drinking the day before, or seen in town drinking.

Funkin' marvellous that!

Well I called in again today and his attitude completely changed... I said I've tried to get ready, my heads spinning and my shirt is soaked with sweat. If I have to get a doctors note I'll go now...

He calmly said that I can self certify for 5days and hope I get better soon. Also said that there were 3others in our patch who had phoned in with flu so it must be doing the rounds.
I can only imagine that yesterday me being the last (probably) to call in n he lost it.

Right back to jeramy Kyle!

If it’s a one off then don’t worry about it as I am sure he has far worse offenders to deal with. If you are a worrier then on your first day back grab a quick word with him and say you felt he didn’t believe you and back it up with some detail and that your not one to take the **** i.e. see my track record. He will probably appreciate that.

Being a supervisor people calling in sick does my nut in. Especially as I work in a large company where HR give you almost no process & support for repeat offenders. This whole self cert thing makes a mockery of it as you can get off for a full week without seeing a doctor.

Should do what our outsourcing company in the Czech Rep does. If you call in sick you call into medical line and they give you some advice and arrange a doctor visit. They don’t tell you when exactly during the day so someone doesn’t just head off to the pub and then come back for the visit time. Either that or offering an incentive for those that take minimal time off.

I think that was very unfair of him to have that attitude when you first phoned in. He was inferring that you were lying when you think about it.

I had a similar episode when I got Asian 'Flu when we were flying out to Singapore and had to spend some time in bed in a hotel room on Hawaii. The boss reckoned I should have conitnued the flight even though I could hardly see the instruments and my co-pilot was very inexperienced. I had to get a certificate to say that I had a 'flu jab but even then he did not want to accept it. I should get a doctor's note to show to your boss anyway. My crew could not have been happier of course to get a bit of free time in Hawaii as you might exdpect.

At least he seems to have changed his mind now, but still worth getting some sort of support from your doctor.

I heard today from one of our contractor's that one of his mates had called in sick a few days before Christmas and everybody thought that he was swinging the lead, next he calls in to say that he had a bad chest infection and is on anti-biotics, then a few days later he was rushed into hospital and was in the intensive care unit and then he was put on oxygen and then a few days later he was dead !!!

However this is the way of things with my company, and the system is used by many of the people I work with.

Work for my company. They don't seem to do nowt for certain staff who take the ****. There is a certain member who lies, doesn't do their hours, has plenty of sick days and claims overtime and commission not owed. They fully aware but guess what nothing is done!

Fair enough, but seriously though, I know a load of public sector people that play the 'game'.

Very recently I was delivering some consultancy to a private sector crowd.
I requested 10 people for the following day, at which one of the chaps declared that 2 0of the 10 I requested were off the following day.
I later discovered that they had a spread sheet, working out the exact number of day and when throughout the year that everyone would have 12 days sick!
This ensures that they are not triggered by the HR system.
Sad state of affairs really.
