Default Best way to do a check on a car I'm interested in?

Long, long time since I bought a car second hand for myself.

How do I/Where do I do HPI, accident etc checks? And check for write-offs?

Or most phone apps aswell have hpi checker and just pay 2.99 for a full report, but not as good as the website checker but more money me thinks
