Just got back from a drive to Cambridge and came across some of these for the first time in a 30mph zone. Trundled along at 28-29 mph as per usual through a village but managed to set the final one of them off flashing "30mph" zone at me as I accelerated out at the end of the built-up area (40mph tops). Are they just meant to embarrass you or should I expect a nasty envelope in the post (didn't see a flash so I assume there is no camera)??

Amazing how paranoid you get these days!

They often use these on stretches of roadworks on motorways. There is one near me where they have just implemented a 20mph zone - I believe they are there as a warning as there doesn't seem to be any cameras involved.

I met these signs on a B road just south of Cambridge a few weeks ago. The one at the start of the 30 flashed at me while I was slowing down and still 100 yards outside the zone!

They have one in a 50 zone on the A414 near Harlow. If you go through it at a dead 50, it sets it off but not the camera just beyond it.

Think they're just a "friendly" reminder.

They have a few of them in the states too.

IIRC they are warnings only.

Apparently unscrupulous persons with "fast" cars use them to see who gets the high score. Unlikely if there is a Gasto just behind though!

There's one on the way into Warrington on the A56, just says Slow Down. It's a 60 zone and fast sweeping bends so it's cool to set it off. Hmmm, seems to defeat the object of putting it up in the first place though...

I remember a program a while ago on making accident black spots safer.

One of the solutions was to put signs like the above up either informing the drivers of their speed or saying "slow down" something to that effect.

The ones in the states were rather like the time displays you get when karting

Question

What is scarey is that these warning lights/signs don't set radar or laser detectors off - so how do they work??? No sign of wires or loops in the roads??

Lets hope they don't start fitting proper traps with such technology

Warning: I can tell you from experience that the police do use the flashing signs as a way of pulling you over.

If they sit a few hundred metres beyond the sign, they can see it light up (in fact there may even be a light on the back), and they pull you up when you reach them. Once stopped they then accuse you of speeding - i doubt you could get prosecuted, but it is an excuse to check your car/papers etc etc...

WTF are you doing speeding through 30mph anyway!!

IMHO they are excellent - we all switch off now and again and the ones I've been past, most people are still doing 30mph a couple of hundred yards down the road. With a gatso, the loud pedal gets hit as soon as they're past it....

Aces, now I can test out my maximum speed without taking my eyes off the road. Do you think it'll also mention my 0-60?

LOL, I bet that was funny to watch

Not sold the Lex yet, I need to shift it quick though, my Scoob purchase is imminent and I can't afford both

Saw one of these in Exeter at the w/e. I manaed to set it off in a 20. No idea how fast I was going, but not madly over the limit. Gave me a ******* heart attack cos I didn't know what the hell was going on. My mrs was in the car and she says she tries to set them off for a laugh sometimes.

Loads of them round here, 2 or 3 just on the A580 into Manchester!

Seem to work from sensors in the road or something, no signs of cameras..
