Default Leveson - Sign the petition if you feel strongly about it

Hi folks,

If you feel strongly about the lack of implementation of the recommendations of the Leveson Enquiry pop over to Hacked Off and sign the petition, only takes 2 seconds

Hacked off - sign the petition

No thanks.

I have sympathy for the Dowlers, Chris Jefferies (spelling?) or similar.
But many had it coming. Hugh Grant can get stuffed, as can Max Moseley (and probably has).
The law is adequate as it is in this respect.
1984 here we come.

That's OK, I did say "if you feel strongly...." so not sure why you felt the need to post, this especially as there is another thread specifically for your views, but hey ho!

I do feel that the press should be held up to criticism if they persist in going beyond the realms of common decency.

Hmmmmm, yes....except that they wouldn't do it if it didn't sell papers.
And WHY does it sell papers? Because most of the public aren't decent any more

Well thats a bit of a miserable way to think about the world in general.

I still say that the Media has a responsibility to respect public decency because not doing so is either unfairly upsetting to the person involved in their account, but it also encourages that kind of attitude and I don't think that is a good thing...do you?

...but the media (e.g. NOTW, afaiaa and allegedly) already broke existing laws - illegal interception of communications, libel, bribery, perjury etc. There is no point in introducing new laws if the existing ones (never mind the new ones) are not going to be enforced!

Do you even know what the recommendations are and what practical effect they will have, or do you just need something to be up in arms about?

If you are interested in this subject, I highly recommend you read this. It is the story of how the SAS sniper story almost didn't get into the papers. The MOD actually served a D notice on the Telegraph to suppress it. That is what you will get more of if the Leveson report goes through. We already have some of the toughest libel laws in the world, and the press fulfillls a useful function of scrutiny. How would the MP expense scandal have gone with more state control of the press? You don't want to throw out the baby with the bathwater...

What an extremely condescending little post, isn't SN a lovely place these days

Yes I do klnow what they are, I can read as it happens!

The fact is that on this thread is the mention of state control of the press, that is not what Leveson recommends, but I guess it doesn't suit your agenda to pull anyone up on that?

You have proved that's NOT TRUE just by posting and showing that you, at the very least, cares a great deal what I think

I think it is very dangerous to muzzle the press.

The public need to start 'self-regulating' a bit and stop buying these terrible rags.

Many MPs want this regulation to happen, which is exactly why I don't. As said earlier, just enforce existing laws.

Signed.

Why on earth people say to themselves "Hmm yes, the answer to failed self regulation is to have more of it" is beyond me.

I take it all the people arguing for self regulation are entirely happy with, say, the police regulating themselves through the IPCC as is the case now, and do not want to see an indepenent body?

Indeed.
Always the most powerful vote you will ever have.

Gagging the press is a dangerous road, but they do have to know what constitutes decent behaviour.

I can't really see why anyone would oppose the Leveson recommendations, assuming it really will be an independent panel who oversees it. Some of the intrusions of privacy we've seen over the past few years have been disgraceful. I don't feel strongly enough to sign a petition but why do the people opposed to it have that opinion?

Stop the press and things like exposing the MPs, Starbucks/Amazon/Google tax payments would never have seen the light of day.

Was only for the Press that those companies got caught.

Whilst a very true statement what does it have to do with the Leveson recommendations?

Because it won't be independent. It will only be independent when it suits. (See BBC, BoE, IPSA, IPCC)

If the press break the law, use existing laws to punish them.

Ok, but presumably Leveson doesn't think the existing laws are adequate, or enforceable?
