My opinion is as valid as yours ......
And my opinion is this:-
1. He knew EXACTLY that the gun was being transported back.
2. For gods sake he had 50, yes 50! rounds of Ammo with it.
3. 'Coveniently' he say's his mental condition meant he 'forgot' he had it - do me a favour!
4. He had it under the bed with the ammo .... he has children, children hide under beds - that's why he's a ******** - he chanced his own children!
5. I don't get caught up in all this hero bollox - he was doing his job, like EVERYONE else does ........ he is a volunteer!
6. It would be very easy for me to run along with the sheep and say ... Baaah, baaaaah, he's a hero, he should be let off, he's not done anything wrong, blah, blah, blah follow the sheep ............ but I have a mind of my own and so did the Court Martial.
He did wrong, he knew exactly what was happening, he deserves to be punished - but, he also deserves to be allowed home for Xmas with his family - that I am pleased about and I wish him the very best family Xmas ....... but, please, don't simply jump on the passing bandwagon!
Think for yourselves, for once ...............

Hold on a second, this guy has had years of training, knows the reality of what a pistol can do and I would say is responsible enough therefore to know how to keep it stored safely.
Someone with his credentials would be a better candidate to have something like that than say one of us right?
I am glad he is out, it's an absolute joke how he was treated and goes to show just how lop sided the law is when young thugs can brutally attack or kill a person but they appear to get away with anything while people like this soldier end up on the sharp end of the law.
And as for his kids having access to his gun...really? I seriously doubt someone with his history would be like me or you (common)?

I think the suspended sentence is about the right balance.
I am fairly sure that keeping souvenirs from the war is an age old tradition - obviously, not getting caught would have been the best outcome for this man.

Like I said on the other thread, prison was perhaps harsh. But I still feel he knew all about it and to have 300+ rounds with it is just plain naughty. He clearly told other people too.. thats how it all came about he had it! Never tell a woman anything!
Still, its ENDEX for him now anyway. Wonder how many books he will write..

He was silly to keep the gun in full working order and also the 300 rounds of ammunition. He must have realised he was risking a court martial. I think it was over the top to jail him though.
