Default Moral Fibre, application and stuff, where it gone ?

Is it me or have we bred a generation of lazy clueless feckwitts ?

Girl at work stuffed her car, going too fast in the wet and is now relying on lifts, she has a 14 mile journey and it isn't the easiest for public transport (2 hours, some lwaking), but without a lift in someones car from her door she wont turn up, is it me or is there something wrong there ?

Me and J4ckos mate used to just go to work on our bikes, I still do, how we got there was not our employers problem and we are under no illusion if we didn't turn up we wouldn't have a job which meant no beer, no car, no holiday so it was important, everyone is late occasionally but I guarantee she wouldn't turn up without a lift, wouldnt even entertain the Bus, too hard, does not compute.

If I couldnt use my car or bike, get public transport or whatever I would pay for a taxi myself, I could walk it in two hours, that just means getting up earlier but it is doable.

As it is one of my team is going out of is way to pick her up, she moans if he ash to stay late and pulled a face as he isn't in the office today, she cadged a lift of someone else.

Makes me feel a bit vindictive if I say don't give her a lift, up to him, nothing to do with me but I think people learn when under duress, when they try something rather than just rejecting it as too hard and may involve getting up earlier.

As you say, it is their responsibility to get to and from work. If they can't be arsed to arrange their own transport they maybe they need to look for a new job.

people have become very lasy these days, they won't do anything that requires a bit of effort or anything that somebody else won't do for them.

Anyway back to the important issue... does she have big t1t5 ? how does she pay for the lifts ??

I'd probably give them leeway for a week or two (you don't say how long it's been going on for) in order for them to get an alternative plan in place. For example "play" with the buses and trains time so you can get the right combination, or maybe buy a cheap run around - sometimes it takes a couple of days. But after that I'd say it was back to normal and any lateness would be considered a disciplinary issue.

Good opportunity for her to get a small scooter. Zero excuses after one week max.

I see a lot of this nowadays people will not take responsibly for their own actions and blame everyone else as to why they cannot/ will not do what is needed.

Maybe not since she might suffer a weight problem hence the need for a lift from her front door.

There's a total lack of genuine consequence these days - that's the problem.

Agreed.
Last winter, we had a lot of deep snow. The roads were awful and we couldn't get our car(s) out of the garden.

My eldest WALKED four miles to work, arriving at 0730, then walked the FOUR miles home, arriving home around 17:30. The paths were so bad, and the snow so deep, it took him 90 minutes each way.

He did that for four days. He was one of only about half a dozen who made it in. The others were then annoyed when they lost money.

Does sound as though it could be your issue. If it is affecting your team then someone should and could pull her up on it.

Who's her boss? You Jacko?

If not has nobody even said anything to her?

In most lines of work if you don't turn up and have a good excuse/sick note then you're defaulted and disciplined accordingly. Is there sick pay at your place this making it easy not to come in?

I can't believe that she likes depending on anyone like that when she can actually drive. Where's her own sense of independence?? May be she is a bit skint atm, but then, she shouldn't be pulling faces for someone taking their time to drop her back off. Patience is virtue and beggers can't be demanders. She should somehow get herself a cheap runabout for now and stop making her colleague's life difficult.

Really annoys me all these threads that bang on about how bad things and people are today compared to some mystical time when everyone and everything was wonderful.

I know I'm a grumpy git, but REALLY????...oh hang on maybe there didn't used to be any grumpy gits either

Does this girl live with her parents? If she does, then the reality of the possibility of losing her home doesn't even register. Entitlement culture, UK 1990 - present.

I can only call it like I see it, I never used to rely on others to get to work, nobody said everything was wonderful but I do feel kids, mine included get over indulged and have unrealitistic expectations of what they "deserve" versus what they should have to do for it, everything seems to be a bit beneath people these days, hence why so many jobs are done by East Europen immigrants, they seem to have the work ethic and have maintained the connection between effort and reward.

I know what you mean. I don't have to worry about using public transport or walk miles to get to work like people used to, I can expect lifts to work now.

Also, whilsyt we have a grumpy old men thread, can we add Towie speak to the list. We have a 26 yo in the office and she thinks its ok to use this language. It really annoys the cr4p out of me. What is wrong with English? She can recount what happened in the show 5 weeks ago, but couldn't tell me what NaCl is.

And no, you really wouldn't, I think the expression is face like a horse!

Yes the average young worker is lazy

I always recruit the old school 40/50s as they are far more loyal brought up to respect ,respectable and actually care about their work and enjoy it and life doesn't revolve around drinking /smoking / Facebook / texting etc

If she can't get to work; Don't pay her. Formal wirtten warning to boot.

We once had a lad who'd fail to turn for work up at random intervals. Three formal warnings and he was sacked. Shame really as he was a nice lad, just so laid back he was horizontal

His replacement was more punctual, but seemed to lack the focus of quality or pride in workmanship in getting the job done right. Had some very scary and serious situations that were caused by that lad f**king it up or forgetting something.

We're not taking on anymore young workers for now (apprentice or otherwise). Had enough of them, and very little incentive to take another one on in this climate.
