Default road tax

I'm looking to buy a second car and just want to see if I'm right with my thinking...

If I purchase a car with mot and insure it while collecting it can I tax it online and drive it instatly without the tax in the window?

No, as the insurance database doesn't update instantly. You'd have to insure it a couple of days earlier and then it should hopefully be on the database. Other than that, get the current owner to tax it.

hmm... interesting twist to the tail. I thought that if I insured it over the phone / internet I would get the insurance number that I enter when doing the tax ?? Or am I way off the ball

Insurance takes upto 7 days to show up.

To confirm use www.askmid.co.uk

To tax it you will need the insurance company to send you out a cover letter confirming reciept of premium and insurance however most post offices will only accept this if you can prove that youve paid for the full year as too many people got away with taxing a car with a cover note and then cancelling there payments in order to get the tax disc

the offence is failing to display a valid tax disc not to not have tax

Even if you have a valid tax disc and you got pulled ( a rareity thesedays though) you would be ticketed

If it was the ANPR system then you will get away with it, providing the databases had updated

It has to be insured if it isn't SORN anyway - so, get the current owner to Tax it and you pay him ...... the Tax takes just a few days to arrive in the Post.

Or, just pop it on a Trailer ....... job done.

So, re MIB. Their SLA for the PNC / DVLA is 14 days.
So they have 14 days to update their systems which in turn update all other systems. I know 14 days is a long time but in general the database is upto date within 48 hours.

So the answer to your question is "probably not". In general the fastest update to the DVLA database is 1 working day - in terms of doing an online tax application. But IME, its 2 to 3 days.

You cant use the "5 day grace" exemption - as you have to apply before the current disc expires.

Your best option is to do it the old way, go into the local Post Office with the V5 counterpart and MOT and insurance and do it that way.

Or - as said get the seller to tax it before you pick it up.

It is an offence not to display a valid road fund tax disk. You might just be unlucky if some "hot shot" decides to report you for it.

BARE IN MIND - unless your on the logbook you will not receive the tax disc the previous owner will!!!

to tax online and have the disc delivered to you, you must be on the logbook. as someone said above get the previous owner to tax it for you then give him the money so much easier.

I don't think the legality of failing to display is entirely true, i believe there's five days grace at the start of each month where you can display your old disc. I think this was brought in when online taxing was introduced. It provides a safety net in case the new disc is held up in the postal system.

My old 4x4 was SORNED, taxed it online and drove to my brothers 10 mins later in the 4x4. Was pulled over after 5 mins, and I said as he got out "I know why you've pulled me" he asked why and I said "Just taxed it online so probably coming up as no tax?".

He confirmed he checked my details and the receipt I printed off to show I had indeed taxed it, 2 mins later he said its fine it's on the system 20 mins after doing it.

You CAN do it this way BUT you need the V5 anyways for the codes, MUCH easier if you send the guy some money to tax it for you so its just a matter of picking it up then.

This from DVLA.

I have not received the tax disc. Can I use the vehicle without the tax disc displayed?
When you apply for a tax disc online or by using DVLA's phone service you are able to legally continue to drive your vehicle for up to 5 days after the tax disc has expired while you wait for the new tax disc to arrive. This will only apply when you have applied for a new tax disc before the current one expires. You should continue to display the expired disc on your vehicle, until the new one arrives.
